Chapter 5 - Marked for Silence

Victoria froze mid-swing, her arm suspended in the air.
Standing in the open doorway was Julian Vance. His silhouette filled the frame, dark and imposing. His jaw was clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin, and his eyes burned with an icy, lethal stillness that made Victoria drop her hand as if she had been scalded.
"Julian!" Victoria gasped, her voice instantly pivoting from vicious threat to panicked innocence. She smoothed down her cashmere coat with trembling hands. "Darling... you startled me! I was... I was just checking on Miss Ross. I felt so dreadfully guilty about what happened tonight, I wanted to ensure she had the resources she needed to recover—"
"Get out," Julian said.
The two words were spoken at a barely audible volume, yet the raw authority behind them seemed to vibrate the very floorboards.
"Julian, please, let me explain—"
"If you are still in this room in three seconds," Julian said, his gaze fixed on her like a sniper's crosshairs, "Marcus will escort you to the gate by your hair. Get out."
Victoria’s face burned with humiliation. She glared at Elena with a look of murderous hatred before sweeping past Julian, her heels clicking aggressively down the corridor.
Julian didn't watch her leave. He stepped into the modest room, his eyes scanning the shredded pieces of the cashier's check scattered across the linoleum floor. He walked over, knelt down, and picked up a scrap displaying the amount: *$500,000.*
He looked up at Elena.
She was sitting straight against the headboard, her breathing shallow, her right hand clutching her bandaged shoulder. She was trembling, but her chin was held high, refusing to break.
"She offered you half a million dollars to disappear," Julian said, his voice quiet, devoid of his usual corporate edge. "Why didn't you take it?"
"Because it would have meant letting her get away with it," Elena answered simply, meeting his piercing gray eyes without flinching. "Mr. Vance, I grew up in foster care. I know what it’s like when powerful people decide that smaller people don't matter. Noah is just a baby. He needs someone to tell the truth for him."
Julian stared at her for a long moment. In the cutthroat world of international finance, Julian was surrounded by sycophants, board members waiting for him to stumble, and women who saw him as an entry ticket to generational wealth. He had built towering walls of cynicism around his heart.
Yet this young woman, living on an hourly wage, had just torn up a fortune because her moral compass was completely unbreakable.
"Noah is asking for you," Julian said softly. "He won't sleep. He’s having nightmares about the glass."
Elena immediately pushed the blankets aside, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed despite a grimace of pain. "Let me go to him."
"Elena, you're injured—"
"I can hold him with one arm, Mr. Vance," she said, looking up at him with fierce determination. "He needs to know he’s safe."
Julian watched as she stood up, swaying slightly from dizziness before regaining her balance. Without a word, he reached out and supported her uninjured side, his large, warm hand steadying her waist. A strange jolt of electricity passed between them at the contact—a sudden, intense warmth that caught both of them off guard.
Elena looked up, her breath catching as she found herself inches from Julian’s rugged, handsome face. His slate-gray eyes held an intensity that made her chest tighten, not with fear, but with something entirely foreign.
"Thank you, Elena," he murmured, his voice low and intimate. "For everything."
Before Elena could reply, the shrill wail of a police siren shattered the stillness of the estate grounds below.
Julian’s brow furrowed. He walked to the window, peering down at the circular driveway. Three black-and-white NYPD cruisers had pulled up in front of the main entrance, red and blue lights flashing against the limestone facade.
Marcus appeared at the bedroom door seconds later, his face dark with fury.
"Boss," Marcus said tightly. "We have a problem. The police are here. Captain Miller from the 19th Precinct."
"Who called the police?" Julian demanded. "I explicitly ordered the terrace sealed until our forensic team completed their sweep."
May you like
"Victoria did," Marcus replied grimly. "She reported a grand larceny. She claims her four-carat diamond engagement ring and a vintage heirloom necklace were stolen from her suite during the chaos after the terrace collapse. And she officially named Elena Ross as the prime suspect."
