Chapter 10 - The Tape in the Ruins

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning eighty floors above the streets.

Robert Carter’s hands were shaking so violently that his pen rolled off the table and clicked against the floor. “This is slander! Unsubstantiated garbage!”

“Is it?” Daniel Reyes stepped through the door, carrying a digital audio drive.

He plugged it directly into the boardroom console.

The room’s surround-sound speakers crackled to life. A timestamped cockpit voice recording from three years ago filled the room.

*“Actuator failure on engine two,”* the pilot’s recorded voice screamed through static. *“We need to ground at Teterboro immediately!”*

Then, a voice cut in from the forward cabin—Sophia’s voice, sharp and furious, recorded over the intercom:

*“You can’t land at Teterboro! The FAA inspectors are on site! If they impound this craft, my father’s maintenance contract is finished! Divert to the private strip!”*

*“Ma’am, we have fire indicators in the rear!”*

*“I don't care! Divert it!”*

The audio cut off in a deafening squawk of emergency alarms.

Vincent stood frozen.

Slowly, terrifyingly, he turned his head toward Sophia. The look on his face was no longer grief; it was pure, unadulterated venom.

“You knew?” Vincent’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of a sledgehammer. “The plane was compromised… and you forced the flight path?”

“Vincent, baby, listen to me,” Sophia stammered, backing away from him until her spine hit the mahogany credenza. “It wasn't like that! The pilots exaggerated! I didn't know the engine would actually explode!”

“My wife was seven months pregnant!” Vincent roared, a sound so violent that two board members jumped out of their chairs. He slammed both fists onto the table, shattering the glass water pitcher into a hundred pieces. “My child was on that plane!”

“And you left them!” Sophia shrieked, cornered, her mask completely slipping. “You left her, Vincent! Don't put this all on me! You were the one who carried me down the aisle! You were the one who held me while the cabin burned! You chose me!”

Those words hit Vincent like a bullet to the chest.

He stumbled backward, catching himself on the edge of the table. He looked down at his own hands—the hands that had carried Sophia out while leaving his pregnant wife behind.

He looked up at me, his eyes overflowing with hot, bitter tears of self-disgust.

“Anna…” he choked out. “Anna, I didn't know… I swear to God, I didn't know…”

“It doesn't matter what you knew, Vincent,” I said, picking up my purse. “What matters is what you did. By five o’clock today, the SEC will unseal the indictment against the Carter family. And Aegis Global will execute our hostile takeover of your remaining debt.”

I turned toward the exit.

“Have a good afternoon, Mr. Moretti. I believe you have a company to lose.”
