Chapter 15 - The Crucible of Blood

The abandoned rail depot smelled of damp earth, rusted iron, and the sharp, nauseating stench of fresh kerosene.

Rain had begun to fall again, beating a frantic tattoo against the corrugated tin roof of the warehouse.

Vincent walked through the rusted sliding doors first, his hands raised, his eyes locked on the tiny figure tied to the chair twenty yards away.

“Sophia,” Vincent called out, his voice steady despite the tremor in his hands. “I’m here. Put the flare down.”

Sophia emerged from behind a rusted train car. Her makeup was smeared across her hollow cheeks, her hair tangled, her eyes shining with madness.

“You came,” she smiled, a grotesque, broken smile. “You still care about your family, don't you, Vincent?”

Behind a stack of shipping pallets near the western entrance, Daniel and I crept silently through the shadows. Daniel had his laser sight leveled at Sophia’s shoulder, but the distance was too great, and Leo was directly in the line of potential fire.

“Let the boy go, Sophia,” Vincent said, taking a slow step forward. “He has nothing to do with this. You hate me. You hate Anna. The child is innocent.”

“Innocent?” she laughed hysterically. “He is the reason you looked at me like I was dirt! The moment you found out he was alive, you discarded me like trash! After everything I did for you!”

“You caused the crash, Sophia!” Vincent shouted, his voice cracking with emotion. “You almost killed them three years ago!”

“And you finished the job!” she screamed back, leveling the orange flare gun directly at Vincent’s chest. “You walked away with me! We’re partners in this sin, Vincent! You and me! We belong in the fire together!”

From the chair, Leo let out a small, terrified sob. “Maman… I want my Maman…”

Hearing his voice tore through my chest like a physical blade. I moved to break cover, but Daniel grabbed my arm, shaking his head fiercely. *Wait for the angle,* his eyes commanded.

“Sophia, look at me,” Vincent said, dropping his hands and walking directly toward her, closing the distance. “You’re right. It was my fault. I made the choice on that runway. I am the one who deserves to burn.”

Sophia’s hand wavered, surprised by his surrender. “Vincent…?”

“Kill me,” Vincent said, stopping five feet from the barrel of the flare gun, stepping squarely between the weapon and our son. “Let the boy walk out that door to his mother, and you can burn this entire building down with me inside it. A life for a life. That’s what you want, isn't it?”

Sophia stared at him, tears welling in her crazed eyes. “You would die for him? You wouldn't even stay in the plane for Anna, but you’ll die for this brat?”

“I would die a thousand times to give them back the three years I stole,” Vincent whispered.

Then, he lunged.
