Chapter 12 - The Sins of the Father

“He is not your son,” I said, my voice cutting through the quiet country air like a guillotine.

Vincent looked up through the bars, his face ruined by grief. “Anna, please… don't do this. Punish me. Take the company. Take every dollar I have. Strip my name off every building in New York. I’ll sign whatever you want! Just… let me hold him. Let me look at him once.”

“You think this is about money?” I laughed, a cold, sharp sound devoid of humor. “You think you can buy back three years of abandonment with stock certificates?”

“I didn't know you were alive!” he screamed in agony, clutching the bars until his knuckles turned purple. “I thought I was mourning you! I went to that cemetery every Sunday, Anna! Every single Sunday for three years, I sat in the rain and spoke to an empty grave! I wanted to die on that runway!”

“Then why didn't you?” I demanded, taking two swift steps toward the gate, my eyes blazing with all the fury I had held inside for a thousand days.

“Why didn't you go back into that plane, Vincent? You told me you would come back! You promised our baby would always come first! But the moment Sophia Carter cried out, you dropped my hand!”

Vincent flinched, burying his head against the iron. “She was bleeding… she fell…”

“I was trapped in a seatbelt!” I yelled, the memory flashing behind my eyes in vivid, terrifying color. “The metal was burning my skin! The smoke was suffocating my child! And you walked out into the sunshine with your first love in your arms!”

“I thought there was time!” he sobbed. “I swear before God, I thought I could get her out and come back for you in thirty seconds!”

“Thirty seconds was the difference between life and death,” I said coldly. “You gambled my life on thirty seconds, Vincent. And you lost.”

Vincent collapsed entirely into the dirt, weeping openly, the proud titan of Wall Street reduced to a broken shell on a gravel shoulder.

“He doesn't know you exist,” I told him, each word deliberate and surgical. “To Leo, his father is a brave pilot who died before he was born. He will never know you as the man who walked away. I won't allow your cowardice to poison his childhood.”

“Anna… don't erase me,” he whispered hoarsely from the ground. “Please… I am his father.”

“A father stays in the fire,” I said.

I turned my back on him and walked back up the hill, leaving him sobbing in the dust behind the closed gates.
