Chapter 18 - The Fall of the House of Moretti

Two weeks later, the autumn leaves in Central Park had turned a brilliant, brittle gold.

The news was everywhere.

*SOPHIA CARTER TRANSFERRED TO FEDERAL PRISON MEDICAL FACILITY; FACES ATTEMPTED MURDER, KIDNAPPING, AND CONSPIRACY CHARGES.*

*MORETTI ENTERPRISES DISSOLVED: AEGIS GLOBAL COMPLETES LARGEST HOSTILE ACQUISITION IN DECADE.*

The Carter name was erased from Manhattan society. Robert Carter had pleaded guilty to avoid a life sentence, implicating every corrupt contractor who had ever touched the Moretti fleet.

I sat behind the massive mahogany desk in what had once been Vincent’s corner office on the seventy-second floor of Moretti Tower.

The name on the frosted glass outside now read: **AEGIS CONGLOMERATE / ANNA BENNETT, CHAIRWOMAN.**

Daniel walked in, carrying a thin legal folder.

“The hospital released him this morning,” Daniel said quietly.

I looked up from my documents. “How is he?”

“Severe second-degree burns on his left arm and shoulder. Permanent scarring. The smoke inhalation damaged his vocal cords slightly, but the doctors say he will make a full recovery.”

Daniel placed the folder on my desk.

“His attorneys delivered this an hour ago. He signed it yesterday.”

I opened the folder.

It was a full, irrevocable relinquishment of all parental claims, accompanied by a deed of gift transferring all of his remaining personal assets—every trust fund, every offshore property, every family heirloom—directly into an untouchable blind trust in the name of Leo Bennett.

Attached to the bottom was a handwritten note on plain hospital stationery.

*Anna,*

*A father doesn't stay alive by watching his family burn. You taught me what real strength is. I gave up the right to hear him call me father three years ago on a runway in Teterboro.*

*I will not fight you in court. I will not challenge your custody. I will not show up at his school or shadow your life. Everything I have belongs to him, because everything I was died in that fire with my cowardice.*

*If you ever tell him about me, tell him his father was a fool who realized too late that he held heaven in his hands and threw it away for dust.*

*Live your life, Anna. You won.*

*— V.*

I stared at the black ink of his signature. It was shaky, clearly written with a hand still wrapped in medical gauze.

“Where is he going?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

“He bought a small coastal property in northern Maine,” Daniel replied. “Completely off the grid. No board seats. No social circles. He’s leaving the city this evening.”

I closed the folder, looking out over the sprawling empire of steel and glass below.

I had won.

The woman who had crawled through the belly of an exploding jet had returned, dethroned her betrayers, protected her child, and seized the throne of the man who had abandoned her.

So why did the victory taste like ash in my throat?
