Chapter 27 - The Terms of the Serpent

Vance straightened his rumpled coat with trembling fingers, struggling to regain the aristocratic composure he had so effortlessly worn a moment ago. He looked at Adrian, then at me, his chest heaving with shallow breaths.
"You... you are making a grave mistake, Whitmore," Vance wheezed, his voice raspy. "The council in Geneva does not finance chaos. They finance control. If you think you can defy the ancient bloodlines just because you cleared out a few local rats, you are severely mistaken."
"Control?" Adrian scoffed, stepping back toward the console and casually leaning against the edge of the steel table. "Is that what you call the fifty million dollars Julian was embezzling from our joint accounts to fund your private black-ops cells in Eastern Europe?"
Vance’s eyes widened just a fraction—a microscopic slip, but enough.
"I don't know what—"
"Don't insult my intelligence, Vance," Adrian interrupted, tapping the screen of the master keycard. "I have every digital receipt, every encrypted ledger, and every Swiss routing number right here. Julian was your puppet. He was supposed to slowly strangle my supply lines while you sat comfortably in your Swiss villas and waited for the empire to collapse into your lap."
The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the howling wind outside and the rhythmic, heavy pounding of the rain against the ruined exterior walls.
"So here are your new terms," Adrian continued, his voice dropping to a chilling, measured register. "You walk back down those stairs, get back on your little black boats, and you go back to Geneva. You tell the rest of the council that the American syndicate is under new management—*our* management. And if any one of them sends another assassin, another bribe, or another spy across my borders, I won't just cut off their funding. I’ll bring the war straight to their doorstep."
Vance stared at him, his chest still rising and falling rapidly. He looked around the ruined bridge, realizing too late that they had walked directly into a lion's den, completely blind to the traps that had already been sprung.
"And if we refuse?" Vance whispered, venom dripping from his tongue.
Adrian smiled—a cold, humorless expression that didn't reach his eyes.
"Then you won't even make it past the breakwater."
Vance’s jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth might crack. He looked at his guards, gave a tiny, almost imperceptible shake of his head, and turned toward the door.

"This isn't over, Whitmore," Vance spat over his shoulder as he marched out into the hallway. "The council has long memories, and blood always demands a return."
