Chapter 12 - Fractured Steel

The silence that followed my words was shattered only by the faint clinking of ice against crystal.

Don Silvio’s smirk faltered. For a fraction of a second, his predatory gaze flared with genuine outrage. In the history of the Syndicate, no woman—much less a woman who had once dusted his peer’s banisters—had ever dared to speak to him with such icy irreverence in front of his peers.

"Careful, little girl," Silvio sneered, leaning in close enough that I could smell the stench of expensive tobacco on his breath. "The higher a sparrow flies, the harder it falls when the hawk strikes."

"And the bigger the snake, Silvio," Adrian stepped between us, his massive frame completely eclipsing the older man, "the easier it is to sever the head. Remember who holds the city’s supply lines. If a single breath out of your mouth offends my wife again, your family will starve before the winter is out."

Without waiting for a response, Adrian turned his back on the most feared patriarch on the East Coast—the ultimate gesture of disrespect—and escorted me toward the exit. The crowd parted like the Red Sea, terrified of being caught in the crossfire.

"We leave now," Adrian commanded Marcus over his secure earpiece as we stepped into the private VIP elevator. "Sound the high alert. Silvio won't let this slide."

"He won't attack in the city, will he?" I asked, adrenaline thumping against my ribs.

"He won't attack with words again," Adrian replied, his eyes dark with lethal certainty. "He’s an old-school tyrant. When his pride is wounded, he uses fire."

The elevator opened to the underground parking garage. Our three-car convoy was already idling, their blacked-out windows reflecting the harsh fluorescent lighting. We slipped into the back of the armored Maybach, flanked on either side by Adrian’s personal heavy-security SUVs.

The convoy roared out of the subterranean garage, screeching onto the rain-slicked Manhattan streets. The city was a blur of neon and shadows. Adrian held my hand in his lap, his other hand resting firmly against the grip of the tactical pistol strapped beneath his tuxedo jacket.

"You were magnificent back there," he murmured, his voice softening just enough for me to hear. "I thought I was going to have to empty a clip into his throat, but you sliced him to pieces with six words."

"I told you," I breathed, resting my head against his broad shoulder. "I'm not made of glass."

Before the smile could form on his lips, the world exploded into violence.

A blinding flare of headlights suddenly illuminated our left flank. A heavy industrial dump truck, reinforced with a steel cowcatcher, barreled out of a blind cross-street at fifty miles an hour.

"Brace!" the driver screamed.

*CRASH.*

The impact was catastrophic. The truck slammed directly into the lead SUV, flipping the two-ton vehicle into the air like a toy before it crashed onto its roof, skidding across the asphalt in a shower of sparks. Our Maybach spun violently, tires screeching against the wet pavement, slamming hard against a concrete support pillar under the overpass.

The airbags deployed with a deafening pop. My head snapped back, stars exploding behind my eyes, the metallic taste of blood pooling on my tongue.

Through the haze of smoke and ringing ears, the sound of fully automatic gunfire erupted outside.

*Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat!*

Bullets rained down upon our armored glass like heavy hail, spiderwebbing the reinforced windows.

"Elena! Elena, look at me!" Adrian’s voice tore through the fog. His forehead was bleeding from a deep gash near his hairline, his tuxedo jacket torn, but his eyes were wide with pure, terrifying frenzy.

"I'm... I'm alive," I gasped, coughing as smoke filled the cabin.

"Stay down!" Adrian kicked the buckled passenger door open with immense force, using the door frame as an iron shield. He drew two handguns, his posture dropping into a lethal crouch as he opened fire into the darkness, dropping two approaching gunmen clad in black tactical gear before they could breach our perimeter.

He reached down, grabbing my arm, his voice a roaring tempest over the chaos. "They aren't trying to scare us, Elena. They came to wipe us off the map."
