Chapter 14 - The Sovereign Gambit

The boy didn't hold out for thirty seconds. Under the terrifying weight of Adrian’s grip and the absolute coldness in my eyes, Thomas wept, spilling every detail of the transaction.
It wasn't just Don Silvio Valenti.
"It was... it was Whitmore's brother!" Thomas sobbed, his boots dangling inches off the floor. "Lucas Whitmore! He fled to Silvio's compound in upstate New York after you crushed their family! He’s feeding Silvio inside information about the estate's layout! He told Silvio that if they kill Mrs. Cole... you would lose your mind and burn down your own empire in grief!"
Adrian stared at the boy for a long, silent moment. Then, with a flick of his wrist, he tossed Thomas to the ground like a sack of garbage. Viktor instantly stepped forward, pinning the traitor to the marble with two heavy boots.
"Lock him in the subterranean vault," Adrian ordered Viktor, his voice chillingly devoid of emotion. "Keep him alive. He will be our witness."
The grand foyer cleared rapidly as security dragged the sobbing boy away. Only Adrian, Marcus, and I remained beneath the towering portraits of the Cole dynasty.
Adrian turned to me, the adrenaline in his posture giving way to an overwhelming, exhausting weight. He stepped forward and pulled me into his chest, burying his face in my hair, his arms locking around my waist with a desperation that bordered on pain.
"They tried to take you," he whispered, his voice trembling—the first time I had ever heard fear in the voice of the city’s undisputed king. "They used my ex-fiancée's family, they brought the Old Guard, and they almost took you from me."
I wrapped my arms around his neck, feeling the rapid, fierce beat of his heart against my ribs. "They didn't take me, Adrian. We survived the ambush. We caught their mole. We are standing right here."
"It doesn't end until Silvio burns," Adrian pulled back, his gray eyes burning with an apocalyptic fury. "Tomorrow night, I am mobilizing every crew we have. We march on Silvio's mountain fortress. We will level it to the bedrock. I don't care if it starts a five-state war."
"No," I said firmly, grabbing his lapels to hold his gaze. "That's exactly what Silvio wants. He wants you to leave your territory, overextend your lines in the mountains, and walk into an ambush on his ground. That's how my grandmother taught me tyrants win—by making you fight their battle on their terms."
Adrian narrowed his eyes. "What are you suggesting, Elena?"
"We don't go to the mountain," I smiled, a cold, sharp, dangerous smile that surprised even my husband. "We hit the one thing Silvio cares about more than his bloodlines: his money. The secret accounts he uses to pay off the federal judges. When I was cleaning the study for his sister three years ago, I saw the ledger numbers burned into the back of her grandfather's desk."
Adrian stared at me in stunned disbelief. "You memorized a Valenti bank ledger?"
"I memorize everything, Mr. Cole," I whispered. "I was an invisible girl for seven years. People hide their darkest sins in plain sight when they think you are nothing."
A slow, wicked grin spread across Adrian’s scarred face—the pride in his eyes shining brighter than the diamonds at the gala. "My Queen."
Before Adrian could say another word, Marcus stepped back into the foyer, his face gray as a tombstone. He was holding an encrypted satellite phone that was flashing red.
"Sir," Marcus said, his voice trembling. "It’s not just Silvio."
Adrian’s smile vanished. "Speak, Marcus."
"The call just came through from our contacts in Southern Italy," Marcus swallowed hard, glancing at me with genuine dread. "Silvio didn't plan this alone. He formed an alliance. The Camorra council in Naples just deployed a black-tier mercenary squad to the United States. And the commander leading the squad... is the eldest son of the original Cole patriarch."
Adrian froze. The air in the room turned to ice.

"My half-brother," Adrian whispered, the color draining from his face. "Julian."
The shadow that hung over the house of Cole had not disappeared with the dawn. It had simply deepened, bringing with it a ghost of the past that threatened not just to dethrone Adrian, but to set the entire continent ablaze.
