Chapter 20 - The Obsidian Countdown

The deafening concussion of the blast tore through the ancestral manor like the roar of a starving beast.

Time fractured into jagged, hyper-saturated shards. I saw the flash of golden-white phosphorus bloom against the stained-glass windows of the grand gallery a fraction of a second before the shockwave hit. The marble floor beneath my boots buckled, groaning in protest as the subterranean charges Julian had planted detonated in a synchronized chain.

"Elena! Down!"

Adrian’s voice cut through the roaring inferno—a raw, guttural roar that carried the terrifying weight of a cornered predator. He had burst through the wrecked oak front doors not as a mob boss, but as a man whose entire universe had just been set ablaze. His heavy armored truck was still hissing in the courtyard, steam billowing from its crumpled radiator, but Adrian was already sprinting across the shattered marble foyer, ignoring the rain of falling plaster and splintered mahogany.

My ears rang with a high-pitched, agonizing whine. The blast wave had thrown me backward, slamming my spine against the edge of a mahogany side table before I crashed hard onto the dust-choked floor. The taste of copper and ash flooded my mouth. My breath hitched, my lungs refusing to expand as the air was sucked out of the room by the firestorm consuming the east wing.

Through the haze of grey smoke, I saw them.

Julian didn't even flinch. He stood amidst the falling debris with the calm, terrifying poise of a conductor watching his symphony reach its devastating crescendo. Beside him, Bianca’s laughter was a shrill, manic sound, her bruised face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated triumph. She adjusted the lapel of her velvet coat, her eyes locking onto mine with undisguised malice.

"You're too late, Adrian!" Bianca screamed over the roar of the flames, her voice dripping with venom. "The Cole dynasty is ash! And the girl—your precious little maid—was the match that lit the fire!"

Marcus stood slightly behind them, his tactical shotgun still raised, though the blast had knocked him off balance for a heartbeat. His eyes met mine through the drifting smoke. There was no remorse in them. Only the cold, calculated pragmatism of a soldier who had traded his loyalty for a new flag.

"Marcus, you traitorous bastard!" Adrian’s voice was lethal, dropping an octave into a register that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. He didn't draw a gun; he drew a heavy, custom-forged tactical blade from his thigh holster, his muscles coiling like steel cables. "Lower the weapon. Or I will carve your heart out and feed it to the dogs before the fire reaches this room."

Marcus’s jaw tightened, but he didn't lower the barrel. "The old man’s era is over, Adrian. You let sentimentality rot your core. A mafia king doesn't bleed for a servant. Julian offers a unified syndicate—global dominance. You offered us a cage."

"A cage?" Adrian took a step forward, the heat of the encroaching fire painting his broad shoulders in flickering shades of orange and red. "I built an empire out of blood and discipline while you lot were playing merchants. You think Julian is your savior? He’s a parasite who couldn't conquer the table legitimately, so he burned the house down."

Julian chuckled, stepping smoothly in front of Marcus and spreading his arms wide, welcoming the chaos. "Oh, save the melodrama for your memoirs, Adrian. The truth is simple: you lost. The board has voted. The elders have transferred the primary accounts to Valenti-held offshore holdings. Even if you kill us right now, you're a king without a treasury. A ghost sitting on a pile of cinders."

I struggled to push myself up from the floor, my arms trembling violently. The pain from my bruised spine flared with every micro-movement, but my hand instinctively brushed against the small, concealed holster strapped to my thigh—a compact Beretta Adrian had secretly insisted I carry ever since the night Bianca had humiliated me by shearing off my braid.

They thought I was helpless. They still saw the maid. They still saw the girl who used to sweep the marble floors and bow her head when the syndicate lords walked past.

They didn't know that for the past six months, while Bianca was planning her petty acts of jealousy and Julian was plotting his corporate coup, Adrian had spent every evening in the private basement shooting range drilling me until my hands bled.

*“In this world, Elena, a servant is invisible,”* Adrian’s voice echoed in my mind, steady and cold as winter steel. *“And invisibility is the deadliest weapon a sniper can possess.”*

With my teeth clenched so hard my jaw ached, I slid my fingers around the textured grip of the Beretta.

Across the room, Julian noticed the subtle shift in my posture. His arrogant smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. He snapped his fingers at Marcus. "Finish her. Stop talking, just put a slug through her chest and let's go."

Marcus reacted on pure muscle memory, his finger tightening on the trigger of the tactical shotgun. The barrel swung toward my face, the dark, gaping circle of the muzzle filling my entire field of vision.

Time dilated once more.

I didn't scream. I didn't hesitate.

In one fluid, desperate motion, I rolled to the side behind the heavy oak pillar just as the shotgun roared. Splinters of ancient wood exploded into my face, stinging my skin like a handful of thrown needles. The deafening blast shook the remaining glass out of the high arched windows overhead.

Before Marcus could rack the slide for a second shot, Adrian moved with terrifying, unnatural speed. He didn't shoot; he closed the distance between himself and Marcus in three impossibly fast strides. His left hand shot out, clamping around the barrel of the shotgun with iron force, yanking it upward just as Marcus pulled the trigger again. The blast tore harmlessly into the ceiling, showering the room in a rain of burning insulation and drywall.

With a brutal twist of his wrist, Adrian disarmed the traitorous bodyguard, sending the heavy weapon clattering across the marble floor. Before Marcus could throw a punch, Adrian delivered a devastating right hook that sounded like a baseball bat cracking against a skull. Marcus collapsed instantly, his eyes rolling back as he hit the ground like a sack of wet cement.

"Marcus!" Bianca shrieked, her face draining of all color. The veneer of untouchable sophistication completely shattered, leaving behind a terrified, cornered woman.

Julian’s eyes widened, his calm facade finally cracking into panic. He reached frantically inside his velvet coat for his own sidearm, but Adrian was already turning his ferocious gaze toward him, wiping a streak of blood from his cheek.

"Your turn, cousin," Adrian whispered, the sound carrying an absolute, chilling finality.

Before Adrian could cross the remaining ten feet to Julian, a second, massive explosion rocked the foundation beneath our feet. The floorboards directly between Adrian and Julian collapsed into a gaping, smoking pit of orange fire and twisted rebar. A towering wall of white-hot flames erupted upward, sealing off the hallway and cutting Julian and Bianca away from us.

"We'll finish this in the harbor, Adrian!" Julian’s voice echoed mockingly through the roaring inferno, fading as he dragged a screaming Bianca backward toward the emergency service exit. "The container ship leaves at midnight! If you want your empire back, come and find it!"

Through the smoke and searing heat, I crawled to my feet, coughing violently, my hand still gripping my pistol. Adrian stood at the edge of the burning chasm, his chest heaving, his face a mask of cold fury. He turned his head slowly, looking back at me through the firelight.

The manor was burning down around us, our enemies had escaped to the docks with the entirety of the syndicate’s liquid assets, and the war for the underworld was about to reach its blood-soaked climax.

Adrian didn't say a word. He simply reached out his scarred, bloodied hand, and I placed mine firmly into his grasp.
