Chapter 8 - The Ruin of the Vipers

The reality of total, irreversible catastrophe slammed into Chad Montgomery like a freight train.

He staggered away from the podium, his vision spinning. "Dad... where is my dad?! Call my father!"

"Your father already knows, Chad," Ethan said, stepping onto the stage stairs with effortless authority. "Richard Montgomery signed the surrender documents forty minutes ago in London to avoid federal prison for insider trading. He surrendered your power of attorney. You are no longer CEO. You are no longer a board member. In fact, as of right now, you don't even own the tuxedo on your back."

Chad fell to his knees on the stage. The arrogant, untouchable golden boy of Manhattan was reduced to a weeping, hyperventilating wreck in front of every business rival and society peer he had ever mocked.

Brooke saw the ship sinking and immediately rushed toward Ethan, dropping to her knees at his polished shoes. She reached out, trying to grab the hem of his trousers.

"Ethan! Ethan, darling, please!" she sobbed, tears streaming down her cheeks, ruining her mascara. "You know I never stopped loving you! It was all an act! I was playing along with Chad to find out his secrets for you! I did it for us!"

Ethan took half a step back, avoiding her touch as if she were carrying the plague.

"An act?" Ethan asked quietly, looking down at her with pure disdain. "When you shoved my wheelchair away from the table tonight... was that an act? When you laughed while Chad poured champagne on his shoes... was that an act? When you told me I was broken and couldn't satisfy a woman... was that an act too?"

The guests in the front row watched Brooke with expressions of utter revulsion. Her high-society friends, women who had giggled with her only an hour earlier, averted their eyes in shame, distancing themselves from the pariah she had become.

"Ethan, please!" Brooke begged, crawling on the stage floor, completely shedding every ounce of pride she had ever possessed. "We were together for three years! You can't throw me away like this! What am I going to do?! My family is ruined!"

Arthur Sterling collapsed into a chair behind the podium, clutching his heart as SEC agents approached him with formal subpoenas. "My voting rights... my stock options... gone... all gone..."

"Security," Ethan commanded quietly.

The four security guards who had earlier attempted to remove Ethan immediately snapped to attention, marching onto the stage.

"Escort Mr. Montgomery and Miss Sterling off the premises," Ethan ordered, his voice ringing with absolute, unchallenged supremacy. "Revoke their membership to this club, cancel their corporate credit lines, and have their personal vehicles impounded from the valet. They are to leave on foot."

"No! Ethan! You can't do this to me!" Brooke screamed hysterically as two guards hoisted her up by her arms and dragged her kicking and weeping down the main aisle of the ballroom.

Chad didn't even fight. He was dragged out like a lifeless doll, his eyes glazed over in complete psychological ruin, the sound of his ragged sobs fading into the grand foyer.

The entire ballroom turned to Ethan Vance.

Hundreds of executives, billionaires, and socialites immediately began clapping, their applause swelling into a thunderous standing ovation. They clamored forward, eager to shake his hand, eager to kiss the ring of the undisputed sovereign of Wall Street who had executed the most brilliant counter-offensive in corporate history.

"Mr. Vance! An incredible victory!"

"Ethan, congratulations! Let’s talk about that new venture fund!"

"Ethan, we always believed in you!"

Ethan raised one hand.

The room fell instantly silent again.

Ethan looked out across the crowd of sycophants. He saw the same people who had snickered when Chad insulted him. The same people who had looked down at him with pity when he was in the wheelchair.

"When I was at the top, you praised me," Ethan said, his voice cold and cutting. "When you believed I was broken, you looked away. Not one of you offered a word of defense. Not one of you offered a hand."

The crowd shifted uncomfortably, shame washing over their faces.

"The banquet is over," Ethan declared. "Leave."

No one dared argue. Heads bowed, the wealthy elite of New York began quietly, swiftly filing out of the ballroom, terrified of drawing the wrath of the man who had just dismantled an empire in less than thirty minutes.

Within ten minutes, the grand ballroom was completely empty, save for the caterers, the security detail, Marcus Thorne, Ethan Vance... and Isabella Martinez.
