Chapter 7 - The Resurrection of the King

The ballroom fell into a silence so profound that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a jet engine.

Ethan Vance rose to his full height. He stood six-foot-two—broad-shouldered, perfectly aligned, his posture radiating lethal aristocratic power. There was no limp. There was no hesitation. There was no trace of physical injury whatsoever.

Brooke Sterling stumbled backward, her hand flying to her mouth. Her eyes bulged in pure, unadulterated terror. "N-no... no, that's impossible... the doctors said... the spinal severance..."

Chad gripped the edges of the podium so hard that the wood splintered beneath his fingernails. His jaw went slack, his knees trembling violently. "You... you can walk?!"

Ethan adjusted his tuxedo cuffs with slow, deliberate precision. Every movement was that of a panther emerging from the shadows.

"A minor hairline fracture from the crash healed within four weeks, Chad," Ethan said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the vast expanse of the ballroom without the aid of a microphone. "The spinal injury? A fabrication. The medical reports? Forged by my own security detail. The rumors of Vance Holdings’ insolvency? A masterclass in controlled information warfare."

Ethan stepped forward. His footsteps were heavy, confident, and rhythmic. *Click. Click. Click.* Each step struck the silence of the room like a death knell.

"Why?" Arthur Sterling choked out from the stage, his hands shaking so violently he dropped his speech notes. "Why would you fake your own destruction?!"

Ethan stopped at the foot of the stage, looking up at Arthur, Chad, and Brooke.

"Because a kingdom cannot survive when it is infested with parasites," Ethan declared, his eyes flashing with lethal clarity. "For five years, Arthur, you have been funneling Vance tech patents to Montgomery Global. For two years, Chad, you have used shell corporations to short my company's stock while smiling at my dinner table. And you, Brooke..."

Ethan’s eyes turned toward his former fiancée. Brooke felt the raw intensity of his gaze and involuntarily took another step back, her chest heaving in panic.

"You swore you loved me for who I was," Ethan said, his tone devoid of any emotion other than ice-cold finality. "I gave you a simple test. When I lost my legs and my fortune, what did you do? You didn't just leave. You pushed my wheelchair away into the dark so you could parade around on the arm of the man who tried to kill me."

"Ethan, please!" Brooke gasped, tears of panic finally breaking through her heavy makeup. "I... I was confused! Chad manipulated me! He told me you were brain-dead! He forced me to—"

"Shut your mouth, Brooke!" Chad screamed, his voice cracking with hysterical panic. He pointed a trembling finger at Ethan. "So what?! You can walk! Big deal! You’re still broke! Montgomery Global has the signed debt swaps! We own ninety-four percent of Vance equity! You have nothing left!"

Marcus Thorne stepped onto the stage, producing a black leather dossier and handing it to the SEC officials.

"Mr. Montgomery," Thorne announced with clinical coldness. "At exactly 11:45 PM, The Obsidian Syndicate exercised its emergency margin call on the twelve-billion-dollar credit line issued to Montgomery Global."

Chad went white. "What?!"

"The collateral you put up to secure that loan was the entirety of your family’s holding company, your real estate portfolio, and your personal assets," Thorne continued. "Because Montgomery Global failed to post the required liquidity reserve of two billion dollars in cash by midnight, the loan has defaulted."

Chad grabbed his chest, gasping for air. "No... no, the Zurich Consortium said—"

"I am the Zurich Consortium, Chad," Ethan’s voice cut through his stammering like a broadsword. "I bought the debt three weeks ago. As of midnight, Montgomery Global no longer belongs to you. It belongs to me."

A collective, deafening gasp erupted throughout the entire ballroom.
