Chapter 4 - Blood in the Water

Brooke Sterling felt the blood drain from her face until her vision blurred with fury.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Brooke shrieked, breaking the room's aristocratic decorum. She marched toward the back of the room, her designer stiletto heels clicking like gunshots on the polished marble. "Mr. Thorne! That girl is a banquet temp! She gets paid twenty dollars an hour to clear empty glasses! You just handed five million dollars of Evelyn Vance’s jewelry to a servant!"
Marcus Thorne did not even flinch. He turned his cold, gray eyes toward Brooke, measuring her with the indifference one might afford a buzzing fly. "The buyer’s instructions were explicit, Miss Sterling. The piece was to be delivered to Miss Martinez. My contract is fulfilled."
Thorne nodded once more to Ethan—a micro-movement undetectable to the surrounding crowd—and vanished back into the VIP corridor.
Isabella stood frozen, the velvet box heavy in her hands. The immense sapphire sparkled with an inner, incandescent fire, illuminating her wide, shock-filled eyes. "I... I can't accept this," she stammered, looking down at Ethan. "Mr. Vance, this is your mother's. This belongs to your family. I only brought you water. I didn't do this for—"
"Take it, Isabella," Ethan said, his voice quiet, rich, and commanding. "If the buyer saw fit to place it in your care, then your hands are the only ones in this room worthy of holding it."
Chad arrived at Brooke's side, his chest heaving, his pride shredded. He looked between Ethan and Isabella, his mind racing to find an angle of attack. "I see what's happening here," Chad barked, trying desperately to salvage his shattered ego. "This is a stunt! You spent your last hidden pennies hiring Marcus Thorne to make a scene, didn't you, Vance? You're playing games with money you embezzled before your company tanked!"
Ethan leaned back against the headrest of his chair, crossing his hands over his lap. "You should worry less about my finances, Chad, and more about Montgomery Global's liquidity ratio at nine o'clock tomorrow morning."
"My liquidity?!" Chad burst into a loud, obnoxious laugh. "My liquidity is backed by the largest credit syndication in North America! Tomorrow morning at the opening bell, Montgomery Global finalizes the acquisition of Vance Holdings' parent stock for pennies on the dollar. We strip your family name off the corporate tower, liquidate your R&D division, and throw your remaining loyalists out on the street. You will be entirely erased."
"Is that so?" Ethan murmured, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips.
"That's so," Brooke sneered, stepping closer to Ethan's chair. She bent down until her perfume filled his senses—a scent that had once brought him peace, but now smelled only of betrayal. "You should have stayed in the hospital, Ethan. You're broken. You can't walk. You can't lead. You can't even satisfy a woman anymore. You're nothing."
Ethan didn't flinch. His pulse didn't jump. He looked into Brooke's eyes and saw nothing but an empty vessel driven by greed.
"Brooke," Ethan said softly, so that only she and Chad could hear. "When a building burns down, the rats are always the first to run. I never blamed you for leaving. I just needed to be certain you were far enough away so that when the ceiling collapses on Chad, you’d be right under it."
Brooke's eyes narrowed. "You're delusional."
"We'll see," Ethan replied.
Suddenly, a harsh voice interrupted from behind them. "What is going on here?!"
It was Henderson, the head of catering and floor management, a stout man with a sweating forehead and a clip-on bow tie. He had spotted the commotion and the glittering five-million-dollar necklace resting in the hands of his lowest-paid server.
"Mr. Montgomery! Miss Sterling! Is this girl causing trouble?" Henderson demanded, glaring at Isabella with venomous panic.
"She stole the spotlight and insulted VIP guests," Chad lied smoothly, flashing a sinister grin. "In fact, I strongly suspect she's coordinating with this cripple to steal items from the gala. You ought to strip her of that necklace, fire her immediately, and have the police toss her onto the curb."
Henderson’s eyes bulged. "Miss Martinez! Hand that jewelry over to Mr. Montgomery right now and get out of this building before I call the precinct!"
Isabella stepped back, holding the box securely against her chest, her chin lifting. "This was gifted to me openly in front of hundreds of witnesses. You have no legal right to touch it."
Henderson lunged toward her, his hand reaching out to snatch the box.
"Touch her," Ethan’s voice cut through the air like a crack of thunder, "and tomorrow morning you will not only be unemployed, Henderson, but you will also find your name blacklisted from every hospitality union from Boston to Miami."
Henderson froze. The absolute authority in Ethan's voice was unnatural. It wasn't the voice of a broken beggar. It was the voice of an emperor who had sentenced men to ruin with a whisper.
"Listen to me carefully, Henderson," Ethan continued, his dark eyes boring into the manager. "Miss Martinez will complete her shift without harassment, or I will buy the hospitality group that employs you before midnight and fire you personally."
Chad laughed loudly, breaking the spell. "Buy his company? With what, Vance? Your food stamps?! Henderson, ignore him! He's a paralyzed nobody!"
Henderson hesitated, looking between Chad's multimillion-dollar swagger and the dark, chilling certainty in Ethan Vance’s eyes.
Before Henderson could make a disastrous choice, a chime sounded over the ballroom’s sound system.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian Croft's voice echoed through the speakers. "Please take your seats for the keynote address by Mr. Arthur Sterling, Chairman of the Alliance Committee, and our special guest, the prospective Chief Executive of the newly merged Montgomery-Vance Conglomerate."
Chad smirked, adjusting his cuffs. "That’s my cue. Watch and learn, Vance. Watch what a real man looks like when he takes everything you ever built."
May you like
Chad took Brooke’s arm, and together they strutted toward the grand dais, leaving Ethan, Isabella, and a terrified Henderson in their wake.
