Chapter 8 - The Exposure

The arrest of Julian Rochefort sent shockwaves through the upper echelons of high society, but the battle was not over.
By noon that same day, Elisa Rochefort—having evaded immediate detention through a high-priced emergency bail petition filed by her family’s tier-one attorneys—held an impromptu press conference on the marble steps of the Rochefort Foundation headquarters in downtown Manhattan.
Dozens of camera crews and reporters crowded the steps. Elisa stood behind a battery of microphones, dressed in pristine black silk, weeping delicate, rehearsed tears into a lace handkerchief.
"My husband Julian is an innocent victim of a grotesque smear campaign!" Elisa declared, her voice trembling with theatrical grief. "Damon Cross, a man consumed by corporate jealousy, has orchestrated a cruel conspiracy using a disgruntled, unstable former employee to destroy our family's legacy. The Rochefort Foundation has fed, clothed, and sheltered tens of thousands of children! We will not allow our sacred mission to be dismantled by rogue financiers and street criminals!"
The reporters clamored, flashbulbs exploding across her face.
"Mrs. Rochefort!" one reporter shouted. "What about the little girl from the gala? The video circulating on social media shows you denying her a piece of cake!"
"A complete misrepresentation!" Elisa cried out, dabbing her eyes. "That child was brought in by a paid actor to stage a confrontation! I was attempting to protect our guests from an unauthorized intrusion! Damon Cross staged that scene to humiliate me!"
Suddenly, the massive LED billboard towering over the plaza above the foundation headquarters flickered.
The commercial advertisement vanished, replaced by static. Then, high-definition security camera footage illuminated the three-story screen.
The entire press corps went silent. The cameras panned up.
On the screen was the crystal-clear security footage from the rear garden of the Rochefort estate the night before. There was no sound at first, then Damon’s master technical team patched the audio feed directly through the plaza’s public announcement system.
The audio boomed across the entire city square:
*"Keep your hands off. That food is not for you."*
The raw, venomous cruelty in Elisa’s voice echoed between the skyscrapers.
On the screen, the image zoomed in on the terrified, barefoot four-year-old child, recoiling in fear as Elisa sneered down at her.
Then came the second clip: a phone recording pulled from Julian Rochefort’s encrypted cloud server, timestamped forty minutes after the gala incident. Julian’s voice rang out clear as a bell:
*"Make sure Clara Hayes doesn't leave that psychiatric ward alive. Pump enough Thorazine into her system to fry her memory. And find the girl. If the girl talks to Cross, we lose everything."*
Elisa froze on the steps, her lace handkerchief falling from her limp fingers. Her face turned the color of ash.
"Turn that off!" she shrieked at her aides. "Turn it off right now!"
"We can't, ma'am!" her publicist panicked, staring at his tablet. "It’s a direct broadcast override from the federal prosecutor’s office! It's streaming on every major news network and social media platform in the country!"
From the crowd of reporters, the parting sea revealed Damon Cross.
He walked up the marble steps, flanked by the State Attorney General and four United States Marshals.
"The show is over, Elisa," Damon said, his voice quiet, calm, and utterly final.
The Senior Marshal stepped forward, producing a set of handcuffs. "Elisa Rochefort, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, witness tampering, felony fraud, and civil rights violations under the RICO Act."
The flashbulbs erupted into a blinding storm as the handcuffs clicked around Elisa’s diamond-encrusted wrists. She attempted to pull away, her designer heels slipping on the wet marble, screaming obscenities as the marshals led her down the steps toward the waiting transport van.
The crowd of citizens who had gathered in the plaza erupted into applause.

Damon didn't linger for the cameras. He didn't answer a single question shouted by the journalists. He turned on his heel, walked down to his SUV, and closed the door on the hollow world of high society forever.
