Chapter 4 - The Vanishing Mother

The first bullet struck the armored glass with the force of a sledgehammer, spider-webbing the outer laminate in a blinding bloom of white fractures. It didn't penetrate, but the concussive sound reverberated like thunder through the penthouse.

"Down!" Damon roared, sweeping Maya into his arms and diving behind the solid Italian marble kitchen island.

Eleanor dropped flat to the floor behind the sofa. Marcus drew his firearm in a single fluid motion, hitting the wall console that triggered the emergency hydraulic steel shutters. With a heavy, metallic groan, interlocking blast doors slid into place over every window, sealing the penthouse in darkness until the amber emergency lights flickered to life.

In the dim light, Maya was shivering uncontrollably, her face buried into Damon’s chest, her tiny fingers clutching his lapels with desperate strength.

"They found me," she sobbed into his shirt. "They’re gonna take Mommy away forever."

"Nobody is taking anyone," Damon whispered into her hair, his hand steady on the back of her head. "I promise you, Maya. Nobody touches you while I’m breathing."

Marcus pressed his back against the wall, listening through his earpiece. "Shooter was on the commercial rooftop across the avenue. Fired from eight hundred yards. He’s already bugging out via a motorcycle parked in the lower loading bay. Local police will be swarming the perimeter in three minutes."

"Not local police," Damon snapped, rising slowly while keeping Maya securely in his arms. "If Rochefort has contacts in the district attorney’s office, the responding precinct could be compromised. Call my private transport team. We're moving Maya to the Haven."

The Haven was Damon’s fortified family estate in the Hudson Valley—surrounded by private woods, biometric security, and men who answered only to Damon Cross.

"What about Clara?" Marcus asked quietly. "If they took her at eight o'clock, they haven't killed her yet. If they wanted her dead, they would have dropped her in that service alley."

Damon looked down at the tarnished silver locket still clutched in his left palm.

*CR-804 // 412 WATER ST.*

"They didn't kill Clara because they don't have what she stole," Damon said, realization sharpening his mind. "Clara had proof of the forty-million-dollar embezzlement. She hid it. Rochefort abducted her to force her to talk. And when they realized Maya slipped into the gala, they sent an assassin to eliminate the girl before she could lead anyone to the evidence."

Damon turned to Dr. Evans. "Eleanor, I need you to accompany Maya and Marcus to the estate. Stay with her. Keep her sedated if necessary to keep her calm."

"Where are you going?" Eleanor asked, her voice tight with concern.

"To 412 Water Street," Damon said grimly. "Before Rochefort's clean-up crew gets there."

Twenty minutes later, Damon’s black armored SUV rolled through the desolate, rain-slicked streets of the industrial river district. Abandoned brick warehouses stood like rotting monoliths against the grey pre-dawn sky.

Marcus had dispatched four of his top security operatives, who now moved in tactical formation ahead of Damon as they breached the side entrance of 412 Water Street. The air inside the cavernous, rotting structure smelled of damp concrete, rust, and mold.

"Room 804 was an old foreman’s office on the top catwalk," operative Kane reported, keeping his rifle raised. "Clear."

Damon climbed the rusting iron stairs, his boots ringing quietly on the metal grating. At the end of the catwalk, a warped wooden door hung off its hinges. Inside was a barren, dust-covered room.

In the corner lay an old wool blanket folded neatly over a flattened cardboard box. Next to it was an empty plastic water jug, a child’s picture book with torn pages, and a small, handmade doll made from wrapped twine and fabric scraps.

This was where Clara Hayes and her daughter had been hiding like animals while high society drank champagne in their honor.

Damon stepped toward the window sill. Carved into the flaking paint was a tiny message, scrawled in blue crayon:

*Mommy loves Maya to the moon.*

"Mr. Cross," Kane called from the doorway, his eyes scanning the alley below with thermal binoculars. "We’ve got movement at Saint Jude's Memorial Hospital across the river. Marcus just intercepted a private medical transport log. An unidentified female, matching Clara Hayes's description, was admitted forty minutes ago under an alias: Jane Doe. Transferred from an unlisted facility. They have her in the psychiatric intensive care wing."

Damon’s eyes flared. "Psychiatric wing? Why?"

"Involuntary chemical hold," Kane read from his encrypted tablet. "Signed off by a private physician on Julian Rochefort's payroll. If they declare her legally incompetent and criminally insane, her testimony is invalidated—and custody of Maya automatically transfers to state ward control, where Rochefort's board can seal her records forever."

"They're not just silencing her," Damon said, turning sharply toward the exit. "They’re erasing her. Get the car. We’re breaking into that hospital."
