Chapter 6 - The Ambush at the Haven

The iron gates of the Haven estate stood closed, barricaded by Damon’s private security detail in full tactical gear. Beyond the gate, six state trooper cruisers, two unmarked black SUVs, and an official Child Protective Services van had formed a semi-circular blockade, red and blue lights painting the dense pine forest in frantic streaks of crimson and cobalt.

Standing at the front of the police line was Julian Rochefort himself, dressed in a tailored navy trench coat, holding an umbrella against the misty rain. Beside him stood a grim-faced woman in a dark pantsuit, clutching a leather dossier: Agent Miller from County Child Welfare.

Inside the estate’s grand foyer, Maya sat curled on the bottom step of the sweeping mahogany staircase, her arms wrapped around a large, fluffy stuffed bear Mrs. Gable had given her. Dr. Evans stood between the child and the heavy oak front doors, her face set in fierce determination.

"Marcus," Eleanor whispered nervously as the intercom system chimed with a harsh electronic buzz. "What are they going to do?"

"They aren't doing anything," Marcus said, racking the slide of his sidearm and tucking it securely out of sight beneath his suit jacket. "The perimeter holds."

Outside, Julian Rochefort took the megaphone from a state trooper.

"Open these gates!" Julian’s amplified voice boomed across the lawn, dripping with theatrical indignation. "This is an official court order issued by the Third District Family Court! Damon Cross is in possession of an endangered minor who was abducted from a charitable gala! Surrender Maya Hayes immediately, or the state tactical team will breach the property!"

Inside the foyer, Maya began to tremble, squeezing the stuffed bear until her small knuckles turned white. "It’s the bad man from the car," she whimpered, tears spilling down her cheeks. "He’s gonna put me in the dark room."

Before Marcus could reach for the gate controls to deliver a refusal, the roar of a twin-turbocharged V8 engine tore down the private access road.

A reinforced black SUV barreled through the fog, sliding to an aggressive halt directly between the police cruisers and the estate gates, blocking the path of the tactical van.

The door kicked open. Damon Cross stepped out into the rain.

He did not duck his head against the downpour. He adjusted the cuffs of his coat and stepped directly into the glare of the flashing police lights. A second later, the passenger door opened. Kane assisted Clara Hayes out of the vehicle, wrapping a heavy coat over her shoulders.

Julian Rochefort’s sneer vanished instantly. His face drained of color as he saw Clara standing on her own feet, alive and clear-eyed.

"Julian," Damon’s voice cut through the damp morning air with razor-sharp authority. "You seem to have lost your way on private property."

Agent Miller from Child Protective Services stepped forward, waving her paperwork. "Mr. Cross! I am an officer of the court. We have an emergency custodial warrant for the minor Maya Hayes, whose mother is currently listed as a fugitive and mentally incapacitated!"

"Your warrant is toilet paper, Agent Miller," Damon replied smoothly, not even glancing at her. He pointed a finger at Julian. "Because Clara Hayes is standing right here, fully conscious, medically cleared by an independent federal coroner, and accompanied by the Deputy Chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Anti-Corruption Division."

As if on cue, three unmarked federal sedans pulled off the main highway, their blue strobe lights illuminating the trees. Men in FBI windbreakers stepped out, led by Special Agent Harris.

Julian took a step back, panic bleeding through his aristocratic arrogance. "This is an outrage! Clara Hayes is an embezzler who fled prosecution! She has no legal standing!"

"I didn't embezzle your money, Julian," Clara spoke up. Her voice was trembling, but it gained strength with every syllable she uttered. She stepped past Damon, standing tall in the headlights. "You diverted forty-two million dollars from the Foster Care Relief Fund into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands to cover your hedge fund’s margin calls. And I have the cryptographic ledgers to prove it."

Julian let out a desperate, mocking laugh. "You have nothing! We searched your apartment, your office, and your squat! You don't have a single document!"

From the front steps of the estate behind the iron gates, the small front door clicked open.

Maya stepped onto the porch, clutching the stuffed brown bear tightly to her chest. She looked through the ornate iron bars, her eyes locking onto Clara.

"Mommy!" Maya cried.

Clara turned, her face crumbling into tears of pure joy. "Maya! Baby!"

"Get that child!" Julian shouted frantically, lunging toward the gate. "Officers, arrest that woman and secure the girl!"

May you like

Damon stepped directly into Julian’s path, his large hand snapping out like an iron vise, gripping Rochefort by the throat and slamming him backward onto the hood of his own town car.
