Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

“Final match: Absolute Open-Weight Division! Derek Vance versus Cole Miller! Report to Mat 1!”
The arena went completely silent as the announcement echoed through the sound system. Every other match in the facility paused. Hundreds of spectators, coaches, and black belts gathered around the perimeter of Mat 1, four people deep, pulling out their phones to record.
This was no longer just a regional tournament match. It was the climax of an unwritten war between toxic cruelty and disciplined justice.
Derek stepped onto the mat first. He had stripped off his gi top, competing in black compression gear that showed every corded muscle of his 210-pound physique. His face was a mask of murderous concentration. Over the past week, he had lost his students, his local reputation, and his pride. In his mind, there was only one way to restore his shattered ego: he was going to break Cole Miller’s limbs on camera.
Cole stepped onto the mat barefoot, wearing his simple, unbranded black rash guard.
His expression was as still as an arctic lake.
The referee, a seasoned, gray-haired third-degree black belt from out of state, looked between the two men. He knew the tension in the room could ignite like dry tinder.
“Submission-only rules,” the referee stated firmly. “No points. Ten-minute time limit. You fight until someone taps or someone sleeps. Shake hands.”
Cole extended a hand.
Derek spat on the mat right in front of Cole’s feet. “I’m gonna put you in a wheelchair, soldier.”
The referee stepped back, his arm slashing down.
“*Combate!*”
Derek attacked instantly. There was no hesitation, no testing the waters. He charged forward, throwing a vicious double-collar tie to snap Cole’s head down into a brutal guillotine choke.
Cole didn't back away. As Derek’s arms closed around his neck, Cole stepped directly into the clinch, driving his forehead into Derek’s collarbone, preventing Derek from getting the leverage needed to close his hips.
Derek grunted in frustration, trying to use his thirty-pound weight advantage to muscle Cole down to the canvas. But Cole’s base was like concrete set into bedrock.
With a lightning-fast wrist roll, Cole stripped Derek’s hands from his neck, pummeled his underhooks deep, and executed an inside trip.
Derek hit the mat on his back with a bone-jarring crash.
The crowd gasped.
Derek immediately scrambled into an open guard, his long legs trying to entangle Cole’s knees. He reached out with wild, illegal aggression, his fingers clawing directly toward Cole’s eyes in an attempt to blind him away from the referee’s vision.
Cole saw the dirty trick coming from a mile away.
Cole’s left hand clamped around Derek’s fingers, neutralizing the gouge, while his right forearm drove with terrifying, percussive force directly across Derek’s throat—the exact position Derek had used to choke Sarah.
Derek gasped, his eyes bulging as the pressure bore down.
“You like this position, Derek?” Cole murmured, his voice heard only by Derek amid the roar of the arena. “Let’s see how long your ego lasts.”
Derek thrashed like a hooked marlin. He bucked his hips, threw his legs up, tried to roll, but Cole rode every movement with surgical mastery, applying cross-face pressure that ground Derek’s jaw into the canvas.
Cole smoothly transitioned from side control, sliding his knee directly across Derek’s sternum.
Knee-on-belly.
Two hundred pounds of Derek’s muscle were pinned helplessly beneath Cole’s single shin. Derek’s ribs groaned under the agonizing pressure; every breath he managed to suck in felt like inhaling broken glass.
Derek’s hands frantically clawed at Cole’s knee, his face turning an alarming shade of dark purple.
The entire arena was on its feet, shouting, cheering, watching the local bully completely dismantled by a man who wasn't even breathing heavily.
Cole didn't rush to finish. He held Derek pinned for twenty grueling seconds, letting every single person in that arena see Derek’s helplessness. He let Brad watch from the sidelines as his prize enforcer was picked apart like a child’s toy.
Finally, Cole reached down, isolated Derek’s right arm, and smoothly stepped over into a spinning armbar.
Cole caught the arm cleanly between his thighs, falling back into the mat with perfect technical alignment. He extended his hips, straightening Derek’s arm until the elbow joint was locked completely straight.
Derek knew what was coming. If Cole bridged his hips, Derek’s elbow would snap in half like a dry twig.
The terror in Derek’s eyes was absolute.
*Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap-tap-tap!*
Derek slapped Cole’s thigh with frantic, desperate terror, begging for mercy before hundreds of screaming witnesses.
Cole paused. For one chilling second, he looked down at Derek.
Then, honoring the martial code Derek had so brazenly desecrated, Cole released the hold instantly.
Cole stood up.
The referee jumped in between them, lifting Cole’s arm high toward the arena rafters.
“Winner by submission: Cole Miller!”
The arena erupted into thunderous, deafening applause. Spectators leaned over the railings, cheering, clapping, stamping their feet.
Derek lay curled in a fetal position on the tatami, weeping with humiliation, his arm clutched to his chest, his reputation, his gym, and his bullying empire completely destroyed before the eyes of the entire martial arts world.
Brad stood beside the mat, staring blankly into space, his head in his hands as state athletic commission officials walked toward him carrying clipboards and official violation notices regarding the viral footage and gym misconduct reports.
Cole walked off the mat without celebrating. He didn't boast. He didn't flex.

He walked straight toward the bleachers where Sarah was standing, waiting for him with tears in her eyes and a smile that lit up the entire room.
