Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

The Tri-State Grappling Invitational was held inside the cavernous municipal arena downtown. Six elevated tatami mats dominated the floor, surrounded by bleachers packed with hundreds of competitors, coaches, and spectators from three different states. The air smelled of sweat, sports tape, and wintergreen liniment.

When Cole and Sarah walked through the athlete registration entrance on Saturday morning, a ripple of quiet whispers followed in their wake.

The viral video had exploded over the week, reaching over half a million views across grappling forums and combat sports YouTube channels. People in the regional community recognized them immediately: Sarah, the courageous girl who had been assaulted, and Cole, the enigmatic brother whose terrifying dismantling of Derek had become an overnight internet sensation.

Across the warm-up area, Derek was holding court beside the official Apex Grappling team banner.

He was wearing an expensive custom gi, surrounded by Brad and a half-dozen imposing black belts. But Derek’s demeanor had changed; the confident arrogance was replaced by a twitchy, hyper-vigilant fury. Every time a competitor walked past him whispering or pointing a smartphone, Derek’s jaw twitched with suppressed rage.

Brad spotted Cole and Sarah first. His face went pale, then darkened with furious indignity. He marched across the warm-up mats, intercepted them near the registration tables, and hissed under his breath.

“You’ve got a lot of nerve showing your faces here,” Brad growled. “You’ve destroyed my academy’s reputation with that doctored video. Do you have any idea how many sponsors pulled out this week?”

“It wasn't doctored, Brad,” Sarah said firmly, refusing to shrink back. “It showed the entire room what you let Derek do to people.”

“Shut your mouth, Sarah!” Brad snapped. “You’re nobody! You’re a failed white belt who couldn't handle real training!”

Cole stepped forward, cutting off Brad’s path with a cold, immovable presence. “Speak to my sister like that again, Brad, and we won't wait for the tournament bracket.”

Brad swallowed hard, his throat bobbing as he remembered the stories Marcus had wheezed out from an urgent care clinic two nights prior. Brad backed up a step, pointing toward the tournament director’s podium.

“Derek entered the Open-Weight Absolute Division,” Brad spat. “No weight classes. No belt restrictions. Submission-only rules. If you’re such a deadly soldier, Cole, put your name on the bracket. Or are you only brave when you ambush people in training rooms?”

“I’m already registered,” Cole replied evenly.

Brad’s eyes widened slightly in surprise. “Good. Because Derek isn't going to hold back. There are no safe spaces on those mats. You’re leaving this arena on a stretcher.”

As Brad stormed off, Sarah looked at the electronic tournament board mounted above the arena floor.

Her name flashed on the screen: *Sarah Miller – Women’s Featherweight Division – Mat 3.*

Sarah’s breath hitched. Over the week, she had made a secret decision that she hadn't even shared with Cole until this morning: she wasn't just here to watch her brother fight. She had registered to compete.

Cole looked down at her, seeing the familiar terror creeping into her posture.

“You don't have to step out there, Sarah,” Cole said gently. “You don't have to prove anything to anyone in this building.”

Sarah looked across the arena toward Mat 3. Warming up on that mat was Maya, Derek’s primary female protege—a ruthless, aggressive blue belt who had laughed while Sarah lay unconscious on the floor five days ago.

Sarah tightened the knot of her white belt around her waist. She felt her hands trembling, but beneath the fear, an unfamiliar, burning strength took root.

“Yes, I do, Cole,” she whispered, looking up at him with clear, determined eyes. “If I walk away today, Derek wins forever. Every time I look in the mirror, I’ll see the girl who passed out. I need to take my life back.”

Cole looked at his sister, and for the first time that day, a proud, genuine smile touched the corners of his lips.

“Then let’s go take it back,” Cole said.
