Chapter 8 - Sarah’s Fire

“Competitors for Women’s Featherweight, Semi-Finals, report to Mat 3!” the loudspeaker echoed across the arena.

Sarah walked onto the mat, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Across from her stood Maya. Maya was muscular, confident, wearing a navy-blue Apex Grappling gi with Derek’s signature patch stitched onto the back. Maya smirked at Sarah, rolling her shoulders with theatrical dismissiveness.

“You should’ve stayed home, Sarah,” Maya murmured as the referee checked their nails and gear. “Derek told me to finish you quickly so your brother can watch what happens to his family.”

Sarah didn't answer. She took a deep breath, centered her weight, and remembered Cole’s words: *Bullying is loud. True violence is quiet.*

“*Combate!*” the referee shouted, chopping his hand down.

Maya exploded forward instantly, hunting for an aggressive collar-and-sleeve grip, exactly as Derek had taught her. She intended to bully Sarah backward off the mat, run up the points, and lock in an agonizing armbar to assert Apex’s absolute dominance.

Maya grabbed Sarah’s lapel with crushing force, yanking her forward to break her posture.

Six days ago, Sarah would have frozen. Six days ago, the sheer hostility would have triggered a suffocating panic attack.

Not today.

Instead of fighting Maya’s pull, Sarah flowed with it. She stepped forward with Maya’s momentum, planting her right foot deep between Maya’s hips, dropping her hips lower than her opponent’s center of gravity.

Sarah’s hands locked around Maya’s tricep and collar. With a sharp, explosive twist of her hips, Sarah executed a textbook shoulder throw.

Maya flew through the air, her eyes wide with shock, before crashing flat onto her back with a tremendous *slam*.

The bleachers erupted.

Maya groaned, winded, but her instincts kicked in. She scrambled to throw her legs up into a triangle choke as Sarah followed her to the ground. Sarah felt the dangerous lock tightening around her neck—the exact sensation of closing darkness that had haunted her nightmares all week.

For half a second, cold panic flooded Sarah’s veins. Her vision blurred. *He’s going to kill me,* the old memory screamed.

Then, from the edge of the mat, Cole’s calm, steady voice cut through the arena noise:

“Breathe, Sarah. Posture up. Control the hips.”

The panic vanished, replaced by ice-cold focus.

Sarah wedged her knee firmly beneath Maya’s tailbone, driving her spine straight up toward the arena ceiling, breaking Maya’s ankle lock before the triangle could close. Maya gasped, her hips losing purchase.

Sarah didn't retreat. She drove her shoulder hard across Maya’s chest, passing directly into side control.

Maya thrashed violently, attempting to bridge and buck, but Sarah’s weight was distributed perfectly, anchored by the hours of relentless drilling in her living room. Sarah isolated Maya’s far arm, sliding her knee over Maya’s bicep and stepping her leg over Maya’s head.

An Americana armlock.

Maya’s eyes flared with terror as Sarah methodically secured the figure-four grip on her wrist and elbow.

Sarah didn't yank the joint with malice. She didn't crank it with the sadistic pleasure Derek had shown. She simply applied slow, steady, inescapable pressure until the joint reached its absolute anatomical limit.

*Tap-tap-tap!*

Maya slapped Sarah’s thigh frantically, her face pale with defeat.

Sarah released the hold immediately. Not a second late. Not a millisecond of lingering cruelty.

The referee grabbed Sarah’s wrist and hoisted it high into the air.

“Winner by submission: Miller!”

The crowd roared in appreciation for the technical, clean finish. Over by the competitor bleachers, half the crowd stood up, applauding the white belt who had just decisively submitted Apex’s top blue belt.

Sarah stepped off the mat, her chest heaving, tears of pure, overwhelming catharsis spilling down her cheeks. She had faced the ghost that haunted her, and she had destroyed it.

Cole met her at the edge of the mats, wrapping her in a fierce, protective embrace.

“I’m proud of you, Sarah,” Cole whispered. “Now sit down, catch your breath, and let your big brother finish this.”
