Chapter 9 - The Counter-Offensive

"My client, Captain Clara Hayes, MD," the federal prosecutor continued, completely ignoring Carter’s outburst, "has served two combat tours as a trauma surgeon in field hospitals abroad. She was under active federal protection orders due to her security clearance. When the defendant assaulted her, he committed an act of aggravated assault against a commissioned officer of the United States Armed Forces—a federal crime under Title 18 of the United States Code."
Judge Vance-Greene looked like he had swallowed a live hornet. His hand trembled as he set down his pen. "This... this changes the jurisdictional nature of this hearing."
"It does more than that, Your Honor," the prosecutor smiled—a cold, razor-sharp smile. "The defense claimed that our evidence was obtained unconstitutionally. They claim the victim slipped. They claim my client attacked them."
The prosecutor turned toward the aluminum case. Her assistant opened it, connecting a military-grade encrypted flash drive to the courtroom’s audiovisual system.
"What you are about to see," the prosecutor announced, "did not come from a police raid. It did not come from a wiretap. It was retrieved directly from the cloud servers of *Apex Security Systems*—the very security company Carter Vance hired last year to surveil his wife inside their home."
Carter’s face went from pale to completely translucent. "No... stop! Objection!"
"Overruled!" the judge stammered, sweating through his black robes. "Play the video."
The massive 4K monitors on the courtroom walls flickered to life.
The living room of Maple Crest appeared in crystal-clear definition.
The timestamp in the corner read: *8:42 PM.*
On the screen, the heavy front door opened. I walked in, visibly exhausted, clutching my lower back, seven months heavily pregnant.
The audio was pristine.
*"Where the hell have you been, you useless parasite?!"* Carter’s voice echoed through the courtroom speakers with terrifying clarity. *"My mother is hungry! GET IN THE KITCHEN!"*
The spectators in the gallery gasped. Two female reporters covered their mouths in horror.
On the screen, Carter’s hand swung with brutal force.
*CRACK.*
The sound of his palm splitting my lip made half the courtroom flinch.
*"Pathetic,"* Eleanor’s recorded voice purred from the couch, her face clearly visible on screen as she watched with a cruel, mocking smile. *"If you can't even serve your husband properly, what kind of mother will you be?"*
In the courtroom gallery, heads snapped toward Eleanor Vance. Eleanor shrank down in her seat, her face burning with humiliation as the reporters pointed their camera lenses directly at her trembling hands.
The video played on.
The argument. Eleanor spitting out the food. Eleanor rising violently, shoving both of her hands into my shoulders.
The sickening thud as my lower spine struck the sharp granite countertop.
My agonizing scream as I collapsed to the floor in a widening pool of dark blood.
*"My baby! Carter, PLEASE! CALL 911!"*
And then, the fatal nail in Carter Vance’s coffin.
The camera caught Carter looking down at me, grabbing my phone, and hurling it against the wall with cold, deliberate malice.
*"You're not calling ANYONE! I'm a defense attorney. My uncle is a senior prosecutor. Nobody will believe a pathetic farm girl over us!"*
The screen went black.
The silence in the courtroom was absolute. You could hear the faint buzz of the fluorescent lights above.
Carter sat frozen at the table, sweat dripping down the side of his temple, his hands trembling so hard they rattled against the wood.
The federal prosecutor closed her folder.
"Your Honor," she said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "The United States moves to revoke bail immediately. We charge Carter Vance with attempted second-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, witness tampering, and deprivation of civil rights under color of law. And we charge Eleanor Vance as an accessory before, during, and after the fact."
Judge Vance-Greene didn't hesitate. He looked at Carter with an expression of sheer disgust, entirely abandoning any familial loyalty.

"Bail is denied," the judge hammered the gavel down with a violent smash. "Take them both into federal custody. Right now!"
