Chapter 4 - The Golden Hour

The world became a kaleidoscope of sterile lights, screaming sirens, and the metallic smell of antiseptic.
"Crash C-section, room four! Clear the corridors!"
I was wheeled at breakneck speed through the high-security trauma wing of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. They hadn’t taken me to the regional hospital where Carter’s family had connections. The helicopter had bypassed all county borders and landed directly on the roof of the country’s most elite military medical facility.
"Placental detachment is more than sixty percent!" an OB-GYN surgeon shouted, snapping on sterile gloves. "Get the general anesthesia going! We have three minutes to pull this baby out before permanent brain damage!"
A mask was pressed against my face. The sweet, chemical smell of gas rushed into my lungs.
"Carter..." I whispered into the void, tears leaking from the corners of my eyes as darkness pulled at my consciousness. "Why...?"
Back at the Maple Crest residence, the nightmare was only beginning for the Vance family.
Carter was dragged to his feet by two federal agents, his hands cuffed tightly behind his back with heavy steel restraints.
"This is an illegal detention!" Carter shouted, his voice cracking into a high pitch as the initial shock wore off, replaced by hysterical desperation. "I am an attorney! You broke down my door without a warrant! Any evidence you seize is inadmissible under the Fourth Amendment! I will sue every single one of you into bankruptcy!"
Eleanor, sitting on the ruined couch with her hands shaking, clutched her pearl necklace like a lifeline. "I am Eleanor Vance! My late husband was a judge! My brother-in-law will destroy you animals! Let my son go!"
Outside in the cul-de-sac, three black town cars screeched to a halt behind the military barricades.
A tall man in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit stepped out, flashing a gold badge at the perimeter guards. It was Richard Vance, Carter's uncle—the Senior Deputy District Attorney whose name Carter had thrown around like an impenetrable shield for two straight years.
"What the hell is going on here?" Richard barked, marching through the crowd of stunned neighbors who had gathered behind the yellow caution tape. "I am Richard Vance, Deputy DA! Disarm these men and stand down immediately! Who authorized this assault on a civilian home?"
The military police officers at the perimeter didn't flinch. They crossed their rifles across their chests, barring his path.
"Sir, step back," a young lieutenant stated flatly.
"Step back? Do you know who I am?!" Richard roared, pulling out his smartphone. "I have the Governor on speed dial! I will have your commander stripped of his rank by sunrise!"
"He's right here, Richard. Why don't you tell him yourself?"
A voice cut through the damp night air.
Richard froze.
From the shadows of the porch, General Arthur Hayes walked down the brick steps. Two four-star aides followed closely behind him, along with the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s regional field office.
Richard’s phone slipped from his hand, bouncing off the asphalt. The blood drained from his face until he looked like a walking corpse.
"General... Hayes?" Richard stammered, his legal swagger evaporating into thin air. "I... I don't understand. What are you doing in this jurisdiction?"
"Your nephew just tried to murder my daughter," Arthur said simply. His voice wasn't raised, but it carried the weight of a firing squad. "And your sister-in-law shoved her into a counter to finish the job."
Richard swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. "Clara... Clara is your daughter? But Carter said... he told me she was an orphan from a bankrupt rural family with no living relatives..."
"Clara wanted to be loved for who she was, not for my rank," Arthur replied, stepping closer until he stood inches from the prosecutor's face. "She spent two years working sixty-hour shifts as a nurse to help your nephew pay off his law school loans. And this is how your bloodline repaid her."
The front door opened. Carter was escorted out in zip-ties, his designer shirt torn, his nose bleeding.
"Uncle Richard!" Carter cried out, seeing his salvation. "Tell these thugs to uncuff me! They raided the house! It’s a civil rights violation! File an emergency injunction right now!"
Richard didn't move. He didn't speak. He looked at Carter with an expression of sheer, unadulterated horror.
"Uncle?" Carter blinked, his voice trembling. "Uncle Richard?"
"Special Agent Miller," Arthur said, addressing the FBI head. "Arrest Richard Vance for obstruction of justice, aiding and abetting an attempted homicide, and initiate a full audit into his office’s financial ties with the Vance legal defense trust."
"Right away, General."
