Chapter 7 - Awakening to War

Three days later, I stood on my own two feet.

Every muscle in my abdomen screamed in agony. The surgical incision felt like a line of fire across my pelvis, but I refused the wheelchair. I gripped the aluminum handrails of the NICU hallway, inching forward step by step, my father walking silently at my side, ready to catch me if I stumbled.

I reached the incubator.

Leo was tiny. His head was the size of a lemon, his ribcage visible beneath paper-thin skin as the ventilator hissed rhythmically.

*Hiss. Click. Hiss. Click.*

"Hi, my sweet boy," I whispered, pressing my trembling fingertips against the warm plexiglass.

As if hearing my voice, his tiny hand twitched, his micro-fingers flexing against the sterile sheet. A single tear rolled down my cheek, but for the first time in two years, it wasn't a tear of helplessness.

It was the cold, unyielding resolve of a mother who had survived the slaughterhouse.

"He’s stabilizing," the head neonatologist said, approaching with a clipboard. "His brain scans show no signs of major hemorrhaging. He is a miracle, Clara. If you had arrived at the hospital ten minutes later... he wouldn't have made it."

*Ten minutes.*

If Carter had succeeded in smashing my phone completely, if my father hadn't answered... my baby would be dead.

"Clara," my father’s aide-de-camp whispered, stepping into the NICU anteroom and holding out an iPad. "You need to see this."

I walked over, leaning against the counter.

On the screen was a live press conference. Standing on the steps of the county courthouse was Eleanor Vance.

She wasn't in jail. Her high-society friends had pooled their emergency cash to post her five-hundred-thousand-dollar bail before the federal freeze locked down her personal accounts.

She stood before a sea of news microphones, wearing an expensive black dress, dabbing at fake tears with a lace handkerchief while a sleazy, third-rate defense lawyer stood beside her.

*"My son is an innocent man!"* Eleanor sobbed dramatically into the cameras. *"This entire tragedy has been twisted by a powerful military family who wants to destroy us! Clara was always mentally unstable! She was drinking during her pregnancy, she came home erratic, and she attacked my son! When she stumbled into that kitchen counter, Carter tried desperately to help her, but her father used his unconstitutional military connections to orchestrate an armed raid on our home! They are framing my sweet, gentle boy!"*

The reporters erupted into a frenzy of questions.

*"Is it true she committed paternity fraud?"*

*"Did the military overstep its domestic jurisdiction?"*

*"Are you suing the Department of Defense?"*

Eleanor sniffled, looking directly into the camera with an expression of venomous deceit. *"We will fight this tyranny to the Supreme Court! Clara Hayes will not destroy the Vance family with her lies!"*

The aide reached to turn off the tablet, but I grabbed his wrist.

"Leave it," I said.

My father turned to me, his jaw set, his eyes dark with murderous intent. "I can have the Department of Justice issue a gag order within fifteen minutes. I can have her thrown back into a holding cell for witness tampering."

"No, Dad," I said.

I looked at my reflection in the dark glass of the monitor.

The bruised face. The stitched lip. The dead, empty look in my eyes had vanished. In its place was something cold, calculating, and predatory.

May you like

"She wants a war in the public square?" I asked, my voice deadly level. "Give her one."
