Chapter 10 - EVELYN’S UNRAVELING

The silence on River Road was deafening.
The autumn wind rustled the dry leaves along the curb. Across the street, the curtains in the Henderson mansion twitched; Mrs. Henderson and two of her luncheon guests were openly standing on their porch, watching the spectacle unfold.
Sienna looked at the neighbors, then looked at Derek, whose forehead was beaded with cold sweat.
"You disgusting, lying fraud," Sienna hissed, venom lacing every syllable.
"Sienna, wait, don't listen to him—" Derek reached out to grab her wrist.
"Don't touch me!" Sienna jerked her arm away as if he were diseased. "You told me you were divorced! You told me you bought this entire estate with your first tech exit! You let me sleep in that woman's bed while she was in labor? Do you know what this will do to my father's career if this hits the press?"
"Sienna, please—"
"Lose my number, Derek. If you ever contact me again, my father will make sure your firm doesn't even have a vendor's license in this state."
Sienna didn't wait for a reply. She turned on her designer heels, pulled her phone from her purse, and began walking rapidly down River Road toward the main intersection, already dialing an Uber, leaving Derek and his mother standing beside the Porsche.
"Derek..." Evelyn whimpered, her arrogant facade completely shattered. "Derek, do something. Call your partners. Call the bank. Where are we supposed to go? All my jewelry is inside! My furs are in the master closet!"
"Your personal belongings have been neatly packed into eleven storage crates by a bonded, insured moving crew," Marcus said, checking his silver pocket watch. "They are currently en route to a climate-controlled storage facility in Henrico County. You have thirty days of pre-paid storage. After that, the account will require your own credit card."
"My clothes?" Evelyn gasped. "You went through my things?"
"You were a guest in Audrey’s home, Evelyn," Marcus said smoothly. "Guests do not have tenant rights. The locks on all exterior and interior doors were re-keyed three hours ago. The security system has been reset with biometric access. Try to enter, and the Henrico County Sheriff’s Department will arrive in under four minutes to execute an arrest for felony breaking and entering."
Derek slowly looked up, his eyes bloodshot, his hands shaking uncontrollably. "Where is she? Where is Audrey?"
"Mrs. Vance is where you should have been five days ago," Marcus replied. "She is caring for her daughter in peace, surrounded by people who actually value her life."
"I need to talk to her!" Derek yelled, stepping toward the gate bars, his voice desperate and cracked. "She loves me, Marcus! She’s hurt, I know she’s hurt, but we’ve been together for six years! She wouldn't do this to me! She wouldn't destroy my life over a mistake!"
Marcus looked at Derek with pure pity.
"You didn't make a mistake, Derek. You made a calculation. You calculated that Audrey was too weak, too polite, and too dependent to ever hold you accountable. You gambled your entire future on the assumption that she would stay quiet to protect your pride."
Marcus turned his back on them and began walking toward the main security station.

"You calculated poorly."
