Chapter 4 - THE QUIET CALL

Audrey pushed open the heavy front door, stepping out onto the wide stone portico of the mansion. The Virginia air was crisp and scented with pine and river mist.
Behind her, she heard Evelyn’s sharp footsteps echoing on the hardwood foyer.
"Audrey Vance, you come back inside this instant!" Evelyn hissed from the threshold, refusing to raise her voice enough for the neighbors to hear, even in her fury. "If you walk out that door with Derek’s child, don't expect him to welcome you back when you come to your senses!"
Audrey didn't turn around. She walked steadily down the curving brick path toward the security gate at the foot of the driveway. Every step sent a jolt of pain through her lower abdomen, but she kept her spine ramrod straight. She cradled Maisie with one arm and pulled her smartphone from her pocket with the other.
She scrolled past Derek’s name, past Evelyn’s name, and past the group chats with friends who had spent the last two years praising Derek as "the perfect husband."
She stopped at a contact listed simply as *M. Sterling – Trustee*.
She pressed the call icon.
It rang twice before a deep, measured, authoritative voice answered.
"Marcus Sterling."
"Marcus," Audrey said, her voice dropping into a register of crystalline composure that hadn't surfaced since her grandfather died three years ago. "It’s Audrey."
A brief pause hung on the line, followed by the immediate rustle of heavy bond paper. "Audrey. Congratulations on the birth of your daughter. I received the hospital’s registry notification. Are you home safely?"
"I am standing outside the gate of the River Road estate," Audrey replied calmly. "And I need you to execute the Vance Trust contingency protocols immediately."
Marcus was silent for three full seconds. When he spoke again, his voice had shifted from cordial family friend to shark-tier corporate attorney. "Has Derek breached the terms of the marital trust agreement?"
"He brought a woman into the primary suite while I was in the maternity ward," Audrey said, watching her breath form faint vapor in the cool air. "His mother is currently inside, instructing me to sleep in the guest room so as not to cause a scene. Maisie’s heirloom cradle has another woman’s lingerie hanging off it."
On the other end of the line, Marcus let out a slow, controlled exhale. "I see. And the deed?"
"Invoke the sole-beneficiary revocation clause," Audrey said. "Change the perimeter codes, freeze the household operational accounts, and dispatch security. I am taking Maisie to the Broad Street penthouse."
"Consider it done," Marcus said without hesitation. "Audrey... your grandfather put those fail-safes into the trust for a reason. He knew Derek’s father, and he knew how that bloodline operates. You have been more than generous for six years."
"My generosity died in that hospital room, Marcus," Audrey said. "How soon can you have the documents served?"
"The revocation orders and the emergency eviction decree are already drafted; they’ve been sitting in my digital vault since the day you married him," Marcus answered. "I will have them countersigned by Judge Abernathy by noon tomorrow. By two o'clock tomorrow afternoon, I will be standing at the River Road gate myself."
"Thank you, Marcus."
"Audrey?"
"Yes?"
"Do not answer any calls from the Halston family tonight. Let them enjoy their evening in that house. It will be their last."
Audrey ended the call. A black town car she had summoned via a private executive service was already pulling up to the curb, its hazard lights blinking amber against the manicured hedges.

Audrey stepped inside, settled Maisie into the rear infant seat, and closed the door. She didn't look back at the mansion once.
