Chapter 11 - THE SECRET VAULT

Three days later, inside the Broad Street penthouse, the morning sun poured through the panoramic windows, illuminating the sprawling living room.
Audrey sat at a wide rosewood desk, dressed in a tailored navy cashmere sweater and dark trousers. Her hair was pulled back into an elegant chignon. Her recovery was far from complete—the physical ache was a persistent reminder of what her body had endured—but the hollow exhaustion in her eyes had been replaced by a fierce, protective clarity.
Marcus Sterling sat across from her, laying out several thick red-labeled folders.
"The forensic accountants finished their preliminary sweep of Halston Capital Partners last night," Marcus said, his tone unusually grim.
Audrey looked up from her cup of black tea. "What did they find?"
Marcus slid the top folder across the desk. "Derek wasn't just using your trust funds to supplement his lifestyle, Audrey. For the past fourteen months, he has been siphoning capital from the Vance Charitable Foundation through a shell company registered in Delaware."
Audrey opened the folder. Page after page of bank transfers, balance sheets, and forged authorizations bearing her name flickered before her eyes.
"He forged my signature?" Audrey asked quietly.
"On six separate transfer authorizations totaling nearly two point four million dollars," Marcus replied. "He was covering massive margin calls on high-risk derivative trading accounts he opened in the Cayman Islands. He lost almost all of it."
Audrey leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes for a brief moment.
The pieces fell into place with terrifying precision. Derek’s sudden mood swings over the past year. His frantic insistence that she sign "routine trust updates" while she was suffering from severe morning sickness. His mother’s constant lectures about how Audrey needed to "support Derek’s financial vision without prying into his affairs."
"He was broke," Audrey whispered.
"Worse than broke," Marcus corrected. "He was drowning. And it appears he had an exit strategy."
Marcus opened a second folder, sliding out a single, heavily notarized legal document.
Audrey looked down at the heading: *PETITION FOR INVOLUNTARY CONSERVATORSHIP AND TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP.*
Audrey’s breath caught in her throat.
"What is this?"
"Drafted three weeks before your due date by a disreputable family law attorney in Virginia Beach," Marcus explained, his jaw tight with suppressed rage. "Derek had prepared a legal filing alleging that you were suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and clinical depression, rendering you incompetent to manage the Vance Trust or care for your child. He was planning to use your medical recovery period to petition for sole conservatorship over you and your estate."
Audrey stared at the document. Her hands began to tremble, not with fear, but with a cold, terrifying fury she had never known she possessed.
He hadn't just cheated on her.
He hadn't just abandoned her in an operating room.
He had planned to lock her away in a psychiatric facility, take her newborn daughter, and seize control of her grandfather’s empire.
"He left me at that hospital on purpose," Audrey said, the realization hitting her like ice water. "He ignored the seventeen calls because he was hoping... he was hoping there would be complications. He was hoping I wouldn't be able to speak for myself."
"If you had remained incapacitated for another forty-eight hours, this petition would have been filed with an emergency ex-parte judge," Marcus said quietly. "His mother had already signed the supporting affidavit as a 'concerned family member.'"
Audrey looked across the room. Through the open nursery door, she could see Maisie sleeping peacefully in her bassinet, bathed in the soft morning light, completely unaware of the monsters that had hovered at the edges of her life.
Audrey looked back down at the forged signatures and the conservatorship petition.
When she spoke, her voice was so calm, so devoid of emotion, that even Marcus Sterling straightened in his chair.
"Marcus."
"Yes, Audrey?"
