Chapter 10 - The Ambush in Court

Courtroom 402 smelled of polished cedar and damp coats.

Judge Miller sat behind the elevated mahogany bench, his wire-rimmed glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. He didn't look like a friend of Arthur Vance; he looked like a tired bureaucrat who wanted to clear his docket before the holiday weekend.

“Case number 44-B,” the clerk droned. “Vance versus Vance. Emergency ex-parte motion for temporary protective custody and suspension of maternal visitation.”

Arthur’s lead attorney, a razor-sharp woman named Vance-Cole, stepped forward. “Your Honor, we are presenting an urgent petition on behalf of the biological father, Mark Vance. Over the past twelve months, the mother, Claire Vance, has exhibited a pattern of severe emotional volatility. This morning, following an unexplained chemical incident involving their minor daughter, Mrs. Vance abandoned the family home, assaulted her husband, and has actively obstructed medical and familial support.”

She laid a pristine leather binder on the judge’s bench.

“Inside, Your Honor, you will find personal journal entries from the respondent acknowledging deep maternal detachment, coupled with statements from the child’s grandfather regarding erratic behavior.”

Judge Miller adjusted his glasses, flipping through the pages with a frown. “Mrs. Klein? Your response?”

Sarah Klein stood tall, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the chamber.

“Your Honor, the binder before you contains stolen private medical property obtained during a felony home invasion early this morning. But more importantly, it is a desperate fabrication designed to conceal a calculated corporate and physical assault against an eleven-year-old child.”

Sarah turned and brought forward a heavy plastic evidence bin.

“We have here the official toxicology report from St. Jude’s Pediatric Trauma Unit. Lucy Vance did not suffer an accidental household rash. She was intentionally poisoned with weaponized capsaicin and DMSO solvent applied directly to the interior lining of a Christmas gift given to her by Arthur Vance.”

Judge Miller looked up sharply. “Arthur Vance? The grandfather?”

“Yes, Your Honor. Furthermore, Arthur Vance was arrested early this morning after police discovered the preparation lab in his private workshop. And we have digital forensic proof that this entire narrative was orchestrated to steal a multi-million-dollar trust fund that matures on Lucy’s twelfth birthday.”

Sarah plugged a small silver laptop into the courtroom monitor.

The screen flickered to life. It wasn't the stolen journals. It was the surveillance video Jenna had recovered from Arthur’s living room.

The camera showed Arthur Vance sitting calmly on the sofa, sipping his coffee, watching Lucy open the green box. You could see his face clearly. You could see the cold, calculating smile as he checked his watch.

And then, audio recorded from the room’s high-definition nanny cam played through the courtroom speakers.

Arthur’s voice: *“Put them on before breakfast gets cold, sweetheart.”*

Then Lucy’s horrific, piercing scream.

And then, Mark’s voice from off-camera: *“Dad, is it supposed to work that fast?”*

The entire courtroom froze.

Mark turned as white as paper. He grabbed the edge of the counsel table, looking like he was about to vomit.
