Chapter 12 - The Midnight Escape

We couldn't go back to our house. The broken pipe, the shattered security, the memories of eleven years poisoned by deceit—it was dead to us.

By 8:00 PM, Jenna and I had packed three duffel bags with Lucy’s clothes, her favorite books, and the few family heirlooms Arthur hadn't destroyed.

Lucy was discharged from the hospital under the care of a private home nurse Sarah had hired. Her feet were heavily bandaged, and she moved slowly in a wheelchair, but the color had returned to her cheeks.

We brought her to a secluded lake house three hours north, owned by Sarah’s family. It was surrounded by dense pine woods, buried under six inches of fresh powder, and entirely off the grid. No internet, no smart home devices, no landline that Arthur’s private investigators could trace.

The fireplace crackled warmly in the stone hearth. Lucy fell asleep on the oversized sofa, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding her stuffed rabbit.

Jenna sat at the kitchen island, cleaning three mugs with a dishtowel.

“It’s over, Claire,” Jenna said softly, looking at Lucy’s sleeping form. “Mark will take a plea deal. He’s too cowardly for a trial. He’ll testify against Dad to save his own skin. Dad’s lawyers can delay, but they can't erase that video. The trust is safe. Lucy is safe.”

I looked out the panoramic window into the pitch-black woods. The wind was howling through the pines, whipping snow against the double-paned glass.

“Men like Arthur don't stop because a judge told them to, Jenna,” I whispered.

“He’s wearing a GPS monitor, Claire. If he comes within a mile of our old address, sirens go off. If he tries to leave the county, marshals pick him up.”

“Money buys workarounds,” I said, clutching my coffee mug. “You know that better than anyone.”

Jenna didn't answer. She looked down at the counter, the faint shadow of old childhood scars visible beneath her sleeves.

At 11:58 PM, the lights in the cabin flickered once.

Then twice.

Then went completely black.
