Chapter 19 - The Offshore Horizon

The heavy boots of state troopers thudded onto the outer deck of the yacht, their commands ringing loud and sharp through the rain as they secured the gangway and forced the salon doors wide open.
"What are you talking about, Maya?" I demanded, turning my back on the chaos as two uniformed officers pushed past me to secure Eleanor and Chloe. "Chloe just admitted everything. Eleanor orchestrated the whole conservatorship scam to cover the trust deficit."
"No, Lauren, that's only what Eleanor thought was happening," Maya whispered, the background noise of the police station humming behind her voice. "Officer Miller ran the stolen plates on the rental car Chloe used at Emma’s school. The car wasn't leased by Eleanor's family office. It was leased out of Logan Airport two days ago under an offshore corporate LLC based in Zurich."
I froze. The cold salt air rushed into the yacht's cabin as the doors swung wide, but the chill inside my chest had nothing to do with the weather.
"Whose LLC, Maya?"
"Julian’s," Maya said, her voice trembling. "Julian isn't in London. He never was. The divorce settlement he signed four years ago was never finalized in the overseas registry. He’s here, Lauren. He landed in Portland yesterday morning."
I lowered the phone slowly, the world spinning around me. Julian. Emma’s father. The man who had walked away from our lives without a backward glance, surrendering every claim to custody in exchange for a eight-figure payout from my father’s estate.
Across the cabin, as an officer pulled Eleanor’s hands behind her back, she didn't look defeated anymore. Even as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around her thin wrists, a terrible, victorious smile curled the corners of her mouth.
"Did you really believe Thomas left that trust untouched for four years out of love for you, Lauren?" Eleanor whispered, her voice slicing through the din of police radios and snapping zip-ties. "Julian didn't sign away his parental rights. He put them in escrow with me. If Chloe went down, the entire estate defaults to Emma’s surviving biological guardian. You won the battle against your sister, darling... but you just handed legal custody of Emma to the man who sold her before she could even walk."
Out in the harbor, beyond the flashing red and blue strobes of the police boats, the dark silhouette of an unmarked black twin-engine cruiser cut through the heavy fog, heading directly toward the private docking slip where Emma’s safe house was located.

My phone screen flared again. A single text from an unknown international number appeared:
*I’m coming to collect my inheritance, Lauren. See you soon.*
