Chapter 18 - A Mother's Reckoning

Eleanor stood up so violently that her crystal champagne flute tipped over, spilling pale gold liquid across her cream trousers and soaking the court transcripts.

"Shut up, Chloe!" Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic mask completely shattering into raw, venomous fury. "Get back into the lower cabin! Why were you carrying forged family documents into that school? I told you to wait at the safe house in Freeport!"

"You told me to get Emma!" Chloe shrieked, stepping fully into the room, past the stunned corporate lawyers. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me. "She ruined my wedding! She called the vendors, she leaked the guest list to the local tabloids, she canceled my flowers, my dress, the caterers! I had nothing left! You told me if we took Emma, Lauren would trade the trust rights just to get her back!"

The room seemed to drop ten degrees. Vance closed his eyes and buried his face in his hands, realizing that his client had just confessed to extortion and conspiracy in front of four sworn officers of the court.

"You idiot," Eleanor whispered, her voice shaking with murderous rage. "You stupid, selfish child."

"Me?!" Chloe cried, tears carving tracks through the powder on her cheeks. "You're the one who gave me the key to the medical locker! You said Emma’s asthma was mild, that a little hospitalization would make Lauren look negligent to the state! You said we just needed her out of the way for forty-eight hours so we could sign the mortgage papers on the Hamptons estate before the audit came down!"

I didn't yell. I didn't rush across the room to wrap my hands around Chloe’s throat, though every nerve ending in my body begged me to tear the room apart. I stood perfectly still, watching the two of them tear each other to shreds like wild dogs trapped in a gilded corner.

Behind them, the unmistakable roar of marine engines cut through the harbor. Through the starboard windows, two Maine State Police tactical interceptor boats pulled alongside *The Audacity*, searchlights cutting through the gray drizzle and illuminating the salon in blinding, harsh white light.

A bullhorn echoed across the water, rattling the reinforced glass:

*"Vessel The Audacity, this is Maine State Police Marine Patrol. Stand down your engines and prepare to be boarded. Chloe Cole, Eleanor Cole, remain where you are with your hands visible."*

Eleanor looked around the room—at her lawyers who were already packing their briefcases and backing away toward the rear exit, at Chloe who was hyperventilating on the floor, and finally at me.

"You think this is over, Lauren?" Eleanor hissed, her teeth bared in a grotesque sneer. "You think you can survive out there without the Cole name protecting you? You take this family down, and you drown with us. You don't have the stomach to handle what comes next."

"I don't need your name, Eleanor," I said, picking up my phone as it began to ring. "I have my daughter."

I answered the call without taking my eyes off them. "Maya?"

"Lauren," Maya’s voice came through the line, but instead of relief, her tone was breathless, jagged with pure dread. "Lauren, you need to listen to me very carefully. Miller just brought Emma into the precinct safe room, but—"

"Is she okay?" I asked, cold dread instantly seizing my lungs.

"She's physically fine, but Lauren... Chloe wasn't working alone."
