Chapter 14 - Cracks in the Trust

The gravel screamed under my tires as I tore into the school parking lot, Maya holding onto the passenger grab handle with both hands. Two police cruisers were already parked crookedly across the school entrance, their light bars painting the yellow brick walls in rhythmic strokes of blue and crimson.
I burst through the double doors, blowing past the metal detectors, ignored by the two officers who were busy taking statements from the trembling secretary.
"Emma!"
She was sitting on a vinyl sofa inside the principal's inner office, holding a half-eaten granola bar. When she saw me, her eyes filled with tears, and she launched herself off the cushions into my chest.
"Mommy! Some lady said you were in an accident," Emma sobbed into my shoulder, her small arms gripping my neck with bruising force. "She said Aunt Chloe was here to take me to the hospital to see you!"
"I’m here, baby. I’m right here," I whispered into her hair, my body shielding her from the entire room. My voice was calm, but inside, every instinct screamed for violence.
I looked up at Officer Miller, a seasoned local cop who had known my father. He shook his head grimly.
"She’s gone, Lauren. She used a rental with stolen plates. She was off school property within ninety seconds of the alarm being raised."
"She walked into a public school with forged legal documents," I said, my voice dangerously low. "That is attempted kidnapping. That is a federal felony."
"We’re issuing an APB across three states," Miller said. "But Lauren... the papers she showed the clerk weren't entirely forged. They were signed by Eleanor Cole’s family office. Eleanor filed a petition for temporary emergency conservatorship this morning in Boston, citing your 'unstable mental state' and the 'hostile alienation' of the extended family."
I let out a sound that was half-laugh, half-growl.
Eleanor wasn't trying to help Chloe regain her pride. Eleanor was trying to seize legal control of Emma so she could dismiss the criminal complaints against Chloe and reclaim the four-million-dollar trust my father had locked behind Emma’s name.
"Maya," I said without looking back. "Where is my mother right now?"
Maya checked her tablet, her fingers trembling with fury. "Her personal yacht docked at the marina in Camden two hours ago. She’s hosting an offshore luncheon for her legal defense team."
I kissed Emma on both cheeks, gently unclasped her fingers from my collar, and turned her toward Officer Miller.
"Officer Miller, take Emma to the precinct under armed guard. Maya will stay with her."
"Lauren, wait!" Maya grabbed my arm. "What are you going to do? You can't go near that boat without getting arrested for violating the peace bond Eleanor filed!"
I looked at Maya, the fury behind my eyes burning with absolute, diamond-hard clarity.

"Chloe wanted an engagement party. Eleanor wanted a spectacle. Let's go give them both the finale they paid for."
