Chapter 8 - The Raid

"FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE!"
Flashbang grenades detonated in the corridor with blinding white light and concussive roars.
A dozen tactical agents in black body armor, tactical helmets, and assault rifles swarmed the operating room. Red laser dots danced across Dr. Sterling’s chest and Harrison Vance’s forehead.
"STEP AWAY FROM THE PATIENT! HANDS IN THE AIR! DOWN ON YOUR KNEES! NOW!"
Dr. Sterling shrieked like a wounded animal, dropping the syringe of Propofol. It shattered against the tile floor, the white fluid pooling around his sterile booties. He threw his hands into the air, trembling violently.
Harrison froze, his hands still hovering inches from my shoulders. The color drained from his face until he looked like a corpse.
"What... what the hell is this?!" Harrison stammered, raising his hands slowly. "This is a private medical procedure! My wife is in critical condition!"
"SHUT UP AND GET ON THE GROUND, VANCE!" a booming voice roared.
Through the smoke, Liam Vance stepped into the operating room, flanked by Special Agent-in-Charge Marcus Brody of the FBI. Behind them were two female emergency medical technicians pushing an advanced mobile trauma gurney.
"Liam?!" Harrison gasped, utter disbelief twisting his features. "What are you doing here?!"
Liam didn't look at Harrison. He looked directly at me.
"Get her off that table," Liam ordered the EMTs gently.
The technicians swiftly unhooked the bogus IV monitors, carefully transferring me onto the warm, sterile gurney. Liam stepped to my side, stripping off his heavy wool trench coat and draping it over my shaking body.
"You're safe, Chloe," Liam murmured, his voice thick with emotion, his hand gently squeezing my shoulder. "It’s over. We have everything."
"Liam, she needs a C-section!" Harrison screamed as two federal agents kicked his legs out from under him, slamming him face-first onto the blood-spattered linoleum floor. "She has preeclampsia! You're killing my children!"
Agent Brody knelt on Harrison's spine, wrenching his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Harrison Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit federal human trafficking, non-consensual medical experimentation, wire fraud, and aggravated assault," Agent Brody recited coldly.
"Trafficking?!" Harrison screamed, spitting floor wax. "Those are MY children! I am their legal father!"
Liam stepped over, standing directly above Harrison’s pinned head. He pulled the manila folder from his leather briefcase and tossed it onto the floor, inches from Harrison's nose.
The folder spilled open, revealing the DNA sequencing reports from Dr. Al-Hassan's lab.
"Baby A belongs to Madison Hayes," Liam said, his voice slicing through the room like a razor blade. "Baby B belongs to Harper Cole. Both contracts are illegal black-market surrogacy agreements violating federal anti-trafficking statutes."
Harrison’s eyes bulged as he read the third page.
"And Baby C?" Liam leaned down, his gray eyes burning with pure contempt. "Audrey's embryo died six months ago, Harrison. You lied to the Montgomerys to steal five million dollars. Baby C isn't Audrey’s child. She’s Chloe’s. Her biological, legitimate daughter."
Harrison gasped, his eyes darting frantically across the paper. "No... no, that’s impossible! Sterling said her ovaries were dead!"
"I lied to you, Harrison!" Dr. Sterling wailed from the corner where an agent had him cuffed against the wall. "The clinic lost power during the hurricane! Audrey’s embryos were destroyed! I had to fake the logs to cover the insurance audit!"
"You son of a bitch!" Harrison roared, struggling violently against the handcuffs. "You ruined me! You ruined everything!"
"Take them out," Agent Brody ordered.
As the agents hauled Harrison and Sterling to their feet, dragging them out into the hallway, a sudden, sharp spasm seized my entire midsection.
I cried out, clutching my stomach as a warm, gushing sensation soaked through my gown and onto the gurney sheets.
My water had broken.
The stress, the adrenaline, and the shock had triggered active, unstoppable labor.
"Liam!" I screamed, tears blinding me as a contraction ripped through my pelvis like a freight train. "The babies! They're coming!"
The lead EMT checked the fetal heart rate monitor and looked up at Liam with wide eyes. "She’s fully effaced! Contractions are ninety seconds apart! We can't transport her to Manhattan—she’s crowning!"
Liam stepped up to the head of the gurney, gripping both of my hands in his iron grasp.
"Chloe, look at me," Liam commanded, his voice steady, grounding, and completely calm amid the chaos. "Look at my eyes. You have carried these babies through hell. You are going to bring them into the light. I am right here. I’m not leaving you."

I squeezed his hands with every ounce of strength I had left, screaming through the contraction as the FBI tactical team secured the perimeter, converting the raid into an emergency delivery room.
