Chapter 4 - The Snake in My Bed

The penthouse elevator opened with a polite chime onto the private foyer of our two-story Tribeca home.

The apartment was suffocatingly modern: floor-to-ceiling glass, Italian marble floors, and stark white walls devoid of warmth. In the center of the living room, through the double glass doors, was the half-finished nursery.

Three white cribs stood in a neat row against the wall. Three plush sheep hung from a mobile overhead.

Looking at those cribs now made my chest burn with a visceral agony. Harrison hadn't bought those cribs for our family. They were props. Stage dressing to keep his naive little wife pacified until the curtain dropped.

"Chloe? Sweetheart, is that you?"

Harrison stepped out of his home study, holding an iPad in one hand and a glass of sparkling water in the other. He had shed his suit jacket, rolling up the sleeves of his crisp white shirt to reveal the platinum Rolex I had saved my teacher's salary for an entire year to buy him for our third anniversary.

He walked toward me, his face melting into an expression of tender, doting affection that made my skin crawl.

"Where were you?" he asked, stepping close and reaching out to wrap his arms around my waist. "I called your cell twice. You know Dr. Sterling said you shouldn't be driving in your condition."

Every fiber of my being screamed at me to flinch, to slap the smug, lying expression off his face.

*Play the part,* Liam’s voice echoed in my head. *If he suspects for one second that you know, the game is over.*

I leaned into his embrace just enough to hide my face against his chest, biting the inside of my lip until the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.

"I'm sorry, honey," I murmured, making my voice sound thin, breathless, and exhausted. "I had a sudden dizzy spell after the pharmacy. I had to pull over into a café parking lot and rest for an hour. My lower back was throbbing."

Harrison stroked my hair with sickening gentleness. "You have to be careful, Chloe. You're carrying an incredible amount of weight. Think of the babies."

*Think of the merchandise,* was what he meant.

"I know," I whispered, pulling back slightly and placing a hand on my belly. "Dr. Sterling told me I need strict pelvic rest. No stress, no intimacy, just absolute quiet until thirty-four weeks."

A flicker of mild irritation crossed Harrison's eyes—so faint that I would have missed it yesterday, but today, with my eyes wide open, it was as bright as a flare.

"Of course," he said smoothly, kissing my forehead. "Whatever is best for our little miracles. Go lie down in the master suite. I’ll have the housekeeper bring you some bone broth."

"Harrison?" I called out softly as he turned toward the kitchen.

He paused, looking back with a smile. "Yes, darling?"

"Did you... have a good lunch with Julian and Carter?"

His smile didn't waver for a fraction of a second. The absolute mastery of his deceit was terrifying. "Just boring business talk, Chloe. Carter’s looking to invest in the new waterfront project. Nothing for you to worry your pretty head about. Rest now."

I turned and walked toward our bedroom, my spine rigid.

Once inside the master bedroom, I locked the heavy mahogany door, clicked the deadbolt into place, and immediately went to work.

Liam had given me a miniature encrypted flash drive no larger than a thumbnail. While Harrison was downstairs on the phone, I slipped into his private dressing room. Behind the custom shoe racks was Harrison’s small wall safe.

He thought I didn't know the code. But Harrison was arrogant; he used the date of his first million-dollar real estate closing: **1-0-2-4-9-9**.

The safe clicked open with a quiet beep.

Inside were stacks of hundred-dollar bills, three bearer bonds, and a thick, blue leather-bound folder labeled **PROJECT TRINITY**.

My hands shook as I pulled the folder out.

I flipped open the first page.

It was a private, notarized contract between Harrison Vance and Madison Hayes. In exchange for the delivery of a healthy female infant genetically derived from Madison Hayes (Donor Ovum #4092) and Harrison Vance (Donor Sperm #1102), Madison agreed to forgive a debt of $4.2 million and transfer 5% non-voting shares of Hayes Pharma holding assets to Vance Enterprises.

The second contract was with Harper Cole: $3.5 million cash wire upon proof of successful live birth, with a non-disclosure clause enforcing a $10 million penalty if Chloe Vance ever discovered the child’s parentage.

And the third contract.

The Montgomery Family Trust. An outright wire transfer of $5 million for the retrieval and delivery of "Audrey's child," signed by Audrey’s grieving father, Richard Montgomery.

Twelve point seven million dollars.

My husband had sold my womb, my pain, my tears, and six months of my life for twelve point seven million dollars.

Using my burner phone, I photographed every single page, every signature, and every notary stamp. Then, I inserted Liam’s encrypted flash drive into Harrison's backup hard drive sitting on the safe's top shelf, allowing the worm program Liam created to clone every financial record, email archive, and deleted message Harrison had stored over the past three years.

A soft knock sounded at the bedroom door.

"Chloe? The soup is ready."

My heart jumped into my throat.

Quickly, I pulled the flash drive, shoved the leather folder back into the safe, closed the door, and spun the dial. I checked my reflection in the mirror: pale, hollow, but composed.

"Coming, honey," I called out, slipping the phone and flash drive deep into the lining of my maternity pillow.

I unlocked the bedroom door and opened it with a tired smile. Harrison was standing there with a silver tray.

"Dr. Sterling just called," Harrison said casually, setting the tray on the nightstand. "He wants you to come in tomorrow morning at eight sharp for an advanced genetic panel and an amniotic fluid check."

My blood ran cold. "Tomorrow? But my next appointment wasn't supposed to be for two weeks."

Harrison smiled, but his eyes were completely devoid of light.

"He wants to make sure there are no unforeseen complications, Chloe. In fact, Madison and Carter Hayes are hosting a private charity gala tomorrow night at the Metropolitan Club. I think it would do your spirits good to dress up and get out for an hour or two."

He was bringing me to the lions. He was bringing the incubator out to show the buyers their investment before harvest day.

May you like

"I'd love to go," I said softly, meeting his gaze without blinking. "I wouldn't miss it for the world."
