Chapter 3 - The Blueprint of Betrayal

Liam Vance arrived in a tinted black Audi. He parked directly beside my vehicle, stepped out, and scanned the garage with the trained vigilance of a man who had put cartel bosses and corrupt CEOs behind bars.
He was taller than Harrison, with a sharper jawline and eyes the color of winter granite. When he opened my passenger door and climbed in, his presence immediately filled the cramped space. He took one look at my pale, trembling frame and my tear-stained face, and his jaw clenched until the muscles ticked.
"Breathe, Chloe," he said softly, handing me a bottle of water. "Start from the beginning. Every word."
For the next twenty minutes, I laid bare the horror. I told him about the St. Regis hallway, the conversation between Harrison, Julian, and Carter, the mention of Harper, Madison, and Audrey, and the planned post-delivery abduction of all three infants.
When I finished, Liam didn't look shocked. He looked disgusted, his eyes burning with an icy, lethal fury.
"God damn him," Liam muttered, his knuckles whitening on his knee. "I knew he was drowning in debt after his shell corporation in the Cayman Islands collapsed last winter, but this... this is federal human trafficking and gross medical assault."
"Trafficking?" My stomach lurched. "Liam, explain it to me. Who are these babies? Why would they do this?"
Liam opened a secure tablet from his briefcase, his fingers dancing across encrypted databases.
"Let’s start with Madison," Liam said, turning the screen toward me.
On the screen was a dossier on Madison Hayes, the sole heiress to the Hayes Pharmaceutical empire.
"Three years ago, Madison suffered severe uterine damage following an ectopic pregnancy," Liam explained. "Her family's trust fund stipulates that she cannot inherit her thirty-percent stake in Hayes Pharma—worth roughly eighty million dollars—unless she produces a biological heir before her thirtieth birthday. That deadline is three months away. Harrison owes Carter Hayes four million dollars in bad real estate loans. Carrying Madison’s child was Harrison’s way of clearing his debt."
The bile rose in my throat again. "And Harper?"
Liam’s expression hardened. "Harper Cole. High-fashion model, face of half a dozen luxury brands. A severe pregnancy would ruin her modeling contracts and cost her millions in endorsement deals. She’s also been Harrison’s mistress on and off for the past eighteen months."
My heart, already shattered, was pulverized into dust. "Eighteen months? While I was home giving myself progesterone shots that made me so sick I couldn't stand?"
"I’m sorry, Chloe. I’ve had private investigators monitoring Harrison’s shell accounts for months trying to build a fraud case against him. Harper’s name came up on private jet manifests to the Hamptons and Aspen." Liam sighed heavily. "Harper wanted a baby with Harrison, but she refused to carry it. Harrison offered her a turnkey solution: you."
"And the third baby?" I gripped my seat, dreading the answer. "Audrey is dead. Harrison's fiancée died five years ago in a car crash. How can Audrey have an embryo?"
Liam’s fingers hesitated over the screen. He looked up, his gray eyes shadowed with something darker.
"Before Audrey died, she and Harrison froze five embryos at the Sterling Fertility Institute. When she was killed, Audrey’s parents—the Montgomerys—sued Harrison for the rights to those embryos. Audrey was their only child. They offered Harrison full ownership of the Hudson Yards commercial development project—a deal worth fifteen million—if he could somehow provide them with Audrey’s biological grandchild."
"Surrogacy is legal in New York!" I cried out, unable to hold back the scream. "If they had all this money, why didn't they just hire legal surrogates?!"
"Because legal surrogacy requires ironclad contracts, court oversight, psychological evaluations, and public records," Liam countered coldly. "Madison’s trust fund strictly prohibits commercial surrogacy. Harper didn't want the media to know she used a surrogate because it would break her natural beauty brand ambassadorship. And Audrey’s family couldn't legally use Audrey’s posthumous genetic material without a battle in probate court that Harrison would have lost."
Liam leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. "You were the perfect vessel, Chloe. You were legally married to Harrison. Under New York law, a child born to a married woman is presumed to be the biological child of the husband and wife unless contested. Dr. Victor Sterling, Harrison’s college roommate, falsified the lab logs. To the state, you were an ordinary pregnant mother. But behind closed doors, Harrison signed off-the-books assignment contracts with Madison, Harper, and the Montgomerys. He collected their cash upfront—at least twelve million dollars—and used your body as the collateral."
I couldn't breathe. My hands clutched my belly, where the three babies were moving restlessly.
For six months, I had loved these babies. I had sung to them. I had read them fairy tales before bed. I had felt them hiccup, roll, and stretch inside me. My blood had formed their bones; my nutrients had built their tiny lungs and beating hearts.
"They want to take them from me the moment they're born," I whispered, the terror threatening to drown me again. "Harrison said they have seventy-two hours."
"They won't get within ten feet of those babies," Liam swore, his voice ironclad. "But Chloe, you have to listen to me very carefully. If we run right now, Harrison will use his connections, his money, and Dr. Sterling to file an emergency conservatorship over you. He’ll claim you are experiencing severe gestational psychosis, that you’ve fled with his unborn children. The NYPD will hunt you down, drag you to a private psychiatric ward, and Sterling will deliver those babies early behind locked doors."
I stared at him, horror widening my eyes. "Then what do I do?"
Liam leaned back, his eyes narrowing into cold calculation.
"You go home," he said.
"What?! I can't look at him! I'll throw up on his shoes, Liam! I can't let him touch me!"
"You won't let him touch you. You'll tell him you’re having mild Braxton Hicks contractions and Dr. Sterling ordered pelvic rest," Liam instructed, his tone steady, commanding, and infinitely protective. "You go home, you play the loving, exhausted, naive pregnant wife for two more weeks. Meanwhile, I am going to serve subpoenas on Dr. Sterling’s lab, mirror Harrison’s private servers, and get federal warrants ready. We are going to dismantle every single person who conspired to do this to you."
Liam reached across the console and took my trembling hands in his. His grip was warm, solid, and utterly unshakeable.

"You are not an incubator, Chloe. You are their mother. And together, we are going to burn Harrison Vance's world to the ground."
