Chapter 10 - The Ambush

I walked into the boardroom.

I wasn't wearing a Savile Row suit. I wore clean black tactical trousers, desert combat boots, and a dark charcoal button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled to my forearms, exposing the scars from shrapnel wounds across my wrists.

Beside me walked Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Vance, carrying a heavy leather briefcase, flanked by two armed Special Agents from the Defense Criminal Investigative Service and four County Sheriff’s deputies with Glock 17s holstered at their hips.

Behind us, Marcus Diaz stepped into the room, carrying the black Kingston IronKey and the manila folder.

Beatrice stopped screaming. She sagged in the security guards' arms, staring at me as if an archangel had descended into the room to deliver judgment.

Tyler stepped backward until his spine hit the panoramic glass window. The color didn't just leave his face; his lips turned a pale, sickly blue.

"David..." Tyler whispered.

"Morning, Tyler," I said, walking to the head of the Brazilian rosewood table. I pulled out the heavy leather executive chair and sat down, resting my forearms on the polished surface. "I believe you're sitting in my company’s closing meeting."

Arthur Sterling immediately stepped forward, trying to interpose his authority. "Now see here! I don't know what kind of theatrical stunt this is, but this is a closed corporate acquisition! You cannot bring armed personnel into this boardroom! I am Arthur Sterling, lead counsel for Vance Horizon—"

"Shut your mouth, Arthur," Sarah Vance snapped, stepping past him and slamming her federal credential folder onto the table. "I am Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Vance. These premises are currently the subject of an active federal seizure warrant issued by Judge Robert Keller under Title 18 of the United States Code."

Sterling’s jaw went slack. His eyes darted to the gold seal of the Department of Justice. "A... a federal warrant?"

"On what grounds?!" Tyler shouted, his voice cracking with panic. He tried to lunge forward, but one of the DCIS special agents immediately moved, planting his hand firmly on Tyler’s chest and shoving him back against the glass. "I am the registered managing partner of Mercer-Vance Logistics! David Mercer abandoned his post eighteen months ago! We filed legitimate corporate resolutions!"

"You filed forged electronic documents using a stolen digital signature block," Sarah Vance replied, pulling a stack of certified affidavits from her briefcase. "Furthermore, the United States Attorney’s Office has unsealed an eleven-count indictment against you, Tyler Vance, for wire fraud, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, human trafficking, false imprisonment, and conspiracy to defraud the United States Department of Defense."

Tyler shook his head frantically. "Trafficking?! That’s absurd! That’s an intra-family domestic dispute! The wife was mentally unstable—"

"Elena Mercer was examined three hours ago by the Chief of Forensic Medicine at St. Jude’s Hospital," I said, my voice cutting through Tyler’s frantic babble like a straight razor. "She has documented chemical restraints in her bloodstream. Haloperidol. Prescribed to Beatrice Mercer, but administered to my wife against her will to keep her compliant inside a padlocked shed."

Tyler looked wildly at Beatrice. "She did that! That was Beatrice! I had nothing to do with the domestic arrangements!"

"Sergeant Thomas Miller disagrees," Marcus Diaz spoke up, stepping forward and tossing a digital recording device onto the rosewood table. "Miller gave a full sworn proffer at three o'clock this morning. He stated that you paid him twenty-five thousand dollars across three installments to ignore emergency calls from the Mercer estate, and that you personally supplied the padlocks and reinforced the exterior hasp on that shed."

"You're lying!" Tyler screamed, his polished demeanor entirely disintegrating. He looked like a rabid animal cornered against a fence. "Sterling! Call Apex! Tell them to execute the wire! The stock certificates are in the safe—"

"The stock certificates are right here, Tyler," I said, pointing to the manila folder Marcus laid on the table. "The original 2018 shares. The ones your chemical forger in New York tried to scrub. Marcus intercepted your courier’s digital footprint at dawn. Your forger is currently sitting in a holding cell at the Manhattan federal lockup, singing like a canary."

The double doors opened again.

A tall, silver-haired man in a navy bespoke suit entered, surrounded by four corporate executives.

It was Richard Harrison, the Chief Executive Officer of Apex Global Acquisitions.

Harrison took one look at the federal agents, the sheriff's deputies, Tyler cornered against the glass, and me sitting at the head of the table.

"What in God's name is happening here?" Harrison demanded.

Sarah Vance turned to Harrison. "Mr. Harrison, I suggest you immediately instruct your treasury department to cancel the forty-eight million dollar escrow transfer to Vance Horizon. If that wire transmits, your corporation will be named as an accessory to active defense contracting fraud and human trafficking."

Harrison didn't hesitate for a single second. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, hit speed dial, and spoke two words into the receiver: "Abort transfer."

Tyler let out a low, animalistic wail.

"It’s over, Tyler," I said, standing up from the chair. "You gambled my life, you starved my family, and you lost."
