Chapter 9 - The Morning of the Merger

At 8:30 AM, the executive boardroom of Apex Global Acquisitions was the picture of corporate triumph.
The room sat forty stories above the city, surrounded by panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass offering a sweeping view of the sun cutting through the morning mist over the harbor. A massive oval table made of polished Brazilian rosewood dominated the center of the room, flanked by twelve high-backed leather chairs.
Catering staff in black vests quietly set down silver carafes of artisanal coffee, crystal carafes of ice water, and platters of fresh pastries.
Tyler Vance stood by the glass wall, a porcelain cup of espresso in his hand. He was wearing a bespoke three-piece charcoal suit from Savile Row, an Italian silk tie, and a rose-gold Patek Philippe watch—purchased with funds siphoned from my Saudi operational account.
Beside him stood Arthur Sterling, a sixty-year-old corporate attorney with silver hair and gold-rimmed spectacles, known throughout the state as the most ruthless contract closer in corporate law.
"The wire confirmation protocols are verified, Tyler," Sterling said, reviewing a thick leather-bound binder on the table. "Apex’s primary clearing bank in Manhattan has forty-eight million dollars held in temporary escrow. The moment you execute the final closing documents and deliver the original physical stock certificates, the release code will be transmitted. The funds will settle in Vance Horizon’s Delaware account within four minutes."
"And the Mercer trust distribution?" Tyler asked without turning around, sipping his espresso.
"Fully extinguished under the amended debt-indemnity schedule," Sterling replied with a dry, professional smirk. "Beatrice Mercer’s legal counsel attempted to call my office six times between three and five this morning. I instructed the switchboard to block the incoming line. Legally, she has no standing to intervene. The Reno power-of-attorney gives you sole signatory authority as Managing Director."
"Good," Tyler murmured. He checked his watch. "Where is the Apex team?"
"Mr. Harrison and his executive board landed at the airfield twenty minutes ago. Their motorcade is entering the subterranean parking garage right now."
The boardroom double doors opened.
Tyler turned, expecting to see the Apex acquisition team.
Instead, Beatrice Mercer stumbled into the room.
She looked catastrophic. She was wearing the same trench coat from the diner, but her hair was disheveled, her face splotchy and unwashed, her eyes wild with madness and exhaustion. Behind her, two private building security guards tried to reach for her arms, looking flustered.
"Mr. Vance, I’m sorry," one guard stammered. "She claimed to be the majority shareholder’s mother—she bypassed the lobby check-in—"
"Tyler!" Beatrice screamed, lunging toward the rosewood table. "You snake! You lying, thieving bastard!"
Tyler didn't move an inch. He set his espresso cup down with a delicate, deliberate click. "Arthur. Have building security remove this trespasser."
"I am not a trespasser!" Beatrice shrieked, slamming her fists onto the polished wood, knocking over a crystal water glass. "I am Beatrice Mercer! I am the Chairman of the Mercer Family Trust! You cannot sign that deal without me, Tyler! I revoke the power of attorney! I revoke it right now, in front of witnesses!"
Sterling sighed, adjusting his glasses. "Mrs. Mercer, the power of attorney filed under Nevada statutory law is irrevocable for the duration of the closing fiscal quarter. You signed away your right to unilateral revocation on July fourteenth. If you do not leave these premises immediately, I will have the city police take you into custody for criminal harassment."
"David knows!" Beatrice yelled, her voice breaking into a manic laugh. "You think you're going to Switzerland, Tyler?! David is here! He was at the house! He took Elena! He took the boy! He knows about the accounts!"
Tyler’s calm facade slipped for a fraction of a second. A dark, murderous twitch pulled at the corner of his eye. But he quickly recovered, smoothing his jacket.
"David Mercer is currently listed as an MIA contractor with pending DOD inquiries," Tyler said loudly, projecting his voice for the security guards. "Whatever impostor you spoke to last night was an operative hired by our competitors to derail this acquisition. Security, get her out of here. Now."
The two guards moved in, grabbing Beatrice by the elbows.
"Tyler! No! You promised me eight million dollars!" she wailed, thrashing against the guards as they dragged her backward toward the double doors. "You promised me! David! David, help me!"
As the guards wrestled Beatrice through the threshold, the doors were suddenly stopped.
A single hand, clad in a black tactical glove, caught the heavy oak door by the edge.
The guards froze. Tyler went rigid.
May you like
The door swung slowly open.
