Chapter 8 - The Midnight Heist

By 5:00 AM, the cold autumn fog was rolling off the river, wrapping the towering glass spires of the downtown financial district in a shroud of gray mist.
Marcus’s Suburban idled in an alleyway two blocks from the corporate headquarters of Apex Global Acquisitions. Inside the vehicle, the interior glowed with the green and amber status lights of two military-grade signal scanners.
Marcus handed me a heavy manila folder. Inside were the original 2018 Mercer-Vance Logistics stock certificates.
I ran my thumb over the heavy parchment. In the lower right corner, where my bold, distinctive signature had once been, the paper was faintly thinned, the fibers slightly raised from chemical alteration. Above it, in fresh, machine-pressed black ink, was Beatrice’s name, followed by the fraudulent designation: *Beatrice Mercer, Conservator and Attorney-in-Fact for David Mercer.*
Beside the certificates lay a black, military-grade encrypted Kingston IronKey USB drive.
"Chloe came through," Marcus said, tapping the steering wheel. "She was shaking so hard she dropped the safe dial twice, but she got it. We cracked the IronKey’s external wrapper using Tyler’s standard eight-digit military service number followed by his mother’s maiden name. The guy was a genius at spreadsheets, but his operational security is garbage."
"What's on the drive?"
"The smoking gun," Marcus said, turning the Toughbook screen toward me. "Tyler didn't just plan to steal your thirty-two million, David. He’s been siphoning operational capital from our DOD fuel convoys for three years. He was double-billing the Pentagon through an unlisted shell company in Dubai, then routing the overages into Vance Horizon."
"That’s treason," I whispered. "That’s defrauding the federal government during active deployment operations."
"Which means this isn't a state corporate fraud case anymore," Marcus smiled grimly. "At four-fifteen this morning, I sent a full digital packet to the Special Agent-in-Charge at the Defense Criminal Investigative Service and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District. They’ve been building an unannounced inquiry into Apex Global’s overseas acquisitions for six months. We just handed them the keys to the kingdom."
"Is the US Attorney moving?"
"Assistant US Attorney Sarah Vance—no relation to Tyler, thank God—is already in her office on the fourteenth floor of the federal building," Marcus said. "She signed two sealed emergency warrants forty minutes ago. One for Tyler Vance. One for Beatrice Mercer. Chloe is listed as an unindicted co-conspirator pending her cooperation."
I looked down at the forged certificates in my hands.
For five years, while I was breathing sand, sleeping in the back of armored Humvees, dodging sniper fire on the highway between Amman and Baghdad, Tyler had sat in air-conditioned boardrooms, methodically erasing my existence. He had turned my own family into jailers, paid them off with blood money, and reduced my beautiful wife and son to prisoners in a wooden shed.
"What time is the signing?" I asked.
"Apex scheduled the closing for 0900 sharp in Boardroom 40A on the top floor," Marcus replied. "Tyler’s lawyers arrived twenty minutes ago. The Apex acquisition team is flying in from New York on their corporate Gulfstream right now."
"And Sergeant Miller?"
"State Police Internal Affairs picked him up at his residence an hour ago," Marcus chuckled darkly. "He rolled within ten minutes. He gave up Tyler’s cash payments, the dates, the locations, and confirmed that Beatrice Mercer specifically instructed him to ignore any domestic disturbance calls coming from the Mercer estate."
I checked my watch. 05:45 AM.
"Let’s get Elena and Julian moved to the private wing at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital," I said. "I want armed federal marshals on their door before I walk into that building."
"Already arranged," Marcus said. "Deputy US Marshals took over perimeter security at the motel ten minutes ago. Elena knows you're going downtown. She told me to tell you something."
I paused, looking at him. "What did she say?"
"She said... 'Tell David to make sure Julian never has to look over his shoulder again.'"

I gripped the manila folder until the heavy cardstock bent beneath my knuckles. "He won't."
