Chapter 9 - Confession Under the Lights

Flashbulbs detonated like continuous lightning across the dais.
The socialites and corporate executives who had been raising their glasses to Julian Vance seconds earlier scrambled backward toward the perimeter of the pool, desperate to separate themselves from the blast radius of the scandal.
Vanessa let out an animalistic scream of pure rage. She turned on Julian like a viper, her manicured hands clawing at his tuxedo lapels.
"You told me the server was unhackable!" she shrieked into the live microphone on the podium, her voice broadcasting her guilt to every media outlet in North America. "You told me the nurse was handled! You said we would have the proxy signed before the weekend! You dragged me into this, you bastard! You promised me half the logistics shares!"
"Shut up! Shut up, you stupid bitch!" Julian roared, shoving her violently away from him.
Vanessa lost her footing on the slick travertine marble, crashing hard against the sandstone steps of the dais, her three-million-dollar diamond necklace snapping and sending precious stones clattering across the floor like hail.
Julian didn't look at her. He spun around, his eyes wild, darting toward the VIP exit behind the Egyptian exhibit.
He took three desperate strides before he slammed chest-first into a wall of solid muscle.
Detective Marcus Brody stood in his path, his gold shield gleaming on his leather belt, his hand resting calmly on the grip of his service weapon. Behind him stood two armed federal marshals.
"Julian Vance," Brody said, his voice flat and unimpressed. "You're under arrest for attempted aggravated murder, corporate wire fraud, tampering with clinical pharmaceuticals, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent."
Julian lunged to his right, trying to push past the marshals. A federal agent swept his legs out from under him with ruthless efficiency. Julian hit the marble face-first with a sickening crack, his nose breaking on the stone.
Within seconds, steel cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists, pinning his arms behind his back.
"Luca!" Julian screamed, blood dripping from his face onto his white shirt as the marshals dragged him to his feet. "Luca, listen to me! It was King! King approached me! I built this company with you! You can't let them take me! Luca!"
Luca stood at the edge of the dais, his hands resting casually in his pockets, his face carved from cold, immovable granite. He didn't blink. He didn't flinch. He looked at the man who had been his closest friend with less emotion than one would give a stray insect.
"You didn't build this, Julian," Luca said, his voice cutting through Julian’s frantic screams. "You were just a tenant in my house. And your lease is up."
Brody and the marshals hauled Julian away, dragging him past the flashing cameras and the stunned crowd toward the police vans waiting outside.
On the floor of the dais, Vanessa was on her knees, sobbing hysterically, her black velvet gown covered in dust and broken glass. She crawled toward Luca, reaching out with trembling, bleeding hands to clutch at the cuffs of his trousers.
"Luca... please..." she wept, tears cutting black tracks through her mascara. "I was terrified... he threatened me... you know how much I love you. Remember Paris? Remember Aspen? I saved your life! Please, don't let them send me to prison... I'll tell the police everything! I'll testify against Julian!"
Luca looked down at her.
For months, this woman had whispered sweet reassurances into his ear while slowly, systematically slipping poison into his veins. She had smiled at him across dinner tables while waiting for his heart to stop.
Slowly, Luca stepped back, letting her hands fall empty against the cold marble.
"You didn't love me, Vanessa," Luca said softly, his voice devoid of anger, filled only with profound, absolute disgust. "You loved the corpse you were trying to make out of me."
He glanced up at the two female NYPD officers waiting at the base of the stairs. "Take her away."
The officers stepped forward, hoisting Vanessa to her feet. She began to kick and scream, cursing Luca, cursing me, cursing the entire room until the heavy bronze doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off the sound of her descent into ruined oblivion.
The grand hall of the Metropolitan Museum fell into dead, reverent silence.
Five hundred pairs of eyes were fixed on the man standing alone on the dais. The CEO who had returned from the grave.
Luca took a deep, steady breath. He stepped up to the podium, pushed Julian’s blood-spattered speech aside, and looked out over the sea of reporters, investors, and society leaders.
"The board of Moretti Global will convene at eight o'clock tomorrow morning," Luca announced, his voice ringing with absolute, undisputed power. "Every contract, every acquisition, and every proxy signed during the last six months will be audited by independent federal oversight. Those who stood with Julian Vance will be removed. Those who stood for the integrity of this firm will be rewarded."
He paused, his gaze sweeping across the room until it landed on me.
Standing at the side of the stage, my task completed, the medical battle won, I felt a sudden, bittersweet pang in my chest. The crisis was over. The justice was delivered. His life was restored. My job was finished.
I took a half-step backward, preparing to slip quietly into the shadow of the exit before the media circus could engulf me.
"And finally," Luca’s voice boomed through the speakers, stopping me in my tracks.
Every head in the room turned toward me as Luca stepped away from the podium, walked down the stairs of the dais, and crossed the open floor directly toward where I stood.
The cameras followed him, lights blazing.
He stopped two feet in front of me. In front of five hundred people, in front of the global media, the billionaire who had conquered Wall Street reached out and took my hand into his.
"The world calls what happened to me a corporate coup," Luca said, his voice soft now, speaking only to me, though the lapel mic carried his words to every corner of the vast room. "They think the victory belongs to the lawyers and the marshals. But the only reason I am breathing tonight—the only reason my heart is beating—is because of one woman."
He lifted my hand, bringing my bruised, calloused knuckles to his lips, kissing them with a tenderness that brought tears burning to the back of my eyes.

"Emma Hayes didn't just save my company," Luca whispered, his dark eyes shining with an emotion that no money on earth could buy. "She saved my soul."
