Chapter 8 - The Grand Gala Ambush

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Temple of Dendur had been transformed into a glittering fortress of wealth and influence.

It was Friday evening—eight hours after the Delaware court, operating on incomplete evidence and emergency filings, had granted Julian Vance temporary administrative authority over the Moretti Estate.

Julian had wasted no time. To celebrate his formal appointment as acting CEO and to reassure the nervous titans of Wall Street, he had taken over the annual Moretti Foundation Charity Gala.

Five hundred of the most powerful people in global finance, politics, and media milled beneath the towering glass walls of the wing, champagne flutes in hand, surrounded by reflecting pools and ancient sandstone.

At the center of the raised dais stood Julian Vance. He was resplendent in an eight-thousand-dollar Brioni tuxedo, his hair immaculately coiffed, radiating the effortless charm of a man who believed he had just checkmated God.

Beside him, Vanessa Sterling stood like an empress. She wore a dramatic gown of black crushed velvet, her neck ablaze with three million dollars’ worth of Moretti family heirloom diamonds. If her ribs were still bruised from our encounter the previous night, her makeup and diamonds hid it completely.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian’s voice resonated through the state-of-the-art sound system, commanding the immediate attention of the room. The chatter died down; cameras from Bloomberg and CNBC flashed continuously.

"Tonight is an evening of transition," Julian began, his expression settling into a mask of solemn, heroic humility. "As many of you know, my dear friend and brother, Luca Moretti, has suffered a catastrophic medical setback. The burden he carried was immense, and while his body rests in the finest medical care our resources can provide, the work of Moretti Global cannot falter."

A murmur of polite, sympathetic applause rippled through the audience. Vanessa lifted a silk handkerchief to dab at an imaginary tear.

"Today," Julian continued, lifting his champagne glass, "the Delaware Chancery Court entrusted me with the stewardship of this great company. I vow to you, to our shareholders, and most of all to Luca, that we will expand this empire to heights even he could not have imagined. To Luca Moretti. May his recovery be peaceful."

"I wouldn't start drinking just yet, Julian."

The voice didn't come from the dais.

It rolled through the massive sandstone temple like a crack of thunder, projected over the main audio system with deafening, crystalline clarity.

Julian froze, the champagne glass hovering inches from his mouth.

Vanessa’s head snapped toward the grand entrance of the wing, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror.

The heavy bronze doors swung open.

Walking down the grand travertine steps, illuminated by the glare of fifty media flashbulbs, was Luca Moretti.

He didn't look like a man recovering from a stroke. He wore a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo that accentuated every inch of his broad, powerful frame. His stride was effortless, athletic, and brimming with lethal purpose. His dark eyes burned with an icy, terrifying authority that parted the sea of five hundred billionaires like the Red Sea.

Walking beside him, my arm linked firmly in his, was me.

I wore a floor-length gown of emerald silk—a stark, deliberate contrast to the scrubs I had worn while saving his life. My chin was held high, my posture unyielding, carrying the small, leather-bound portfolio containing the forensic warrants signed three hours ago by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Behind us marched Detective Marcus Brody, accompanied by eight federal marshals and four uniformed NYPD captains.

"Luca..." Julian breathed into the microphone, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the podium. The smooth corporate titan was gone; for a fraction of a second, he looked like a condemned man watching the gallows being assembled.

"You look surprised to see me, Julian," Luca said, stepping onto the raised platform. He didn't use a microphone; his natural baritone cut through the silent hall effortlessly. "Did your private medical transport fail to deliver me to the morgue?"

Gasps erupted across the room. Cameras swiveled wildly, reporters shouting over one another as they smelled the corporate bloodbath of the century.

"Luca, you're ill!" Vanessa cried out, rushing forward, her voice pitching into a panicked, frantic shriek. "Guests, please! He’s having a paranoid delusion! He escaped from his medical facility! Security, call the doctors! Protect him!"

"Step back, Vanessa," I said, stepping between her and Luca, my voice ringing clear and steady. "Before I show five hundred of your closest friends the toxicology report on that insulin pen."

Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks, her mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled from water.

Julian tried to recover. He straightened his tie, stepping in front of the microphone with a frantic, menacing glare. "Security! Clear this room! Escort Mr. Moretti and this trespasser out of the building immediately! I hold the court-ordered proxy!"

"You held it, Julian," Luca said, pulling a document from his inner jacket pocket and tossing it onto the podium. It landed squarely on top of Julian’s prepared speech. "At 4:00 PM today, the Federal District Court vacated your Delaware filing on the grounds of aggravated fraud, conspiracy, and attempted murder."

The word *murder* hung in the air of the Temple of Dendur like toxic gas.

"That's absurd!" Julian spat, his face turning an ugly, mottled purple. "You have no proof! You have nothing but the ramblings of a rogue nurse!"

"We have everything, Julian," Luca said softly, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling finality. "We have the encrypted server logs you kept in your office credenza. We have your wire transfers totaling twelve million dollars to Dr. Robert King’s offshore account in the Caymans. And we have the audio recording from floor sixty-five last night."

Luca turned to the tech booth at the rear of the hall and gave a single nod.

A second later, the massive projection screens hanging above the ancient Egyptian temple flickered to life.

Vanessa’s voice, amplified through twenty thousand watts of concert speakers, exploded into the room:

*"Julian planned the whole thing! He found King! I was just trying to protect my future... he told me Luca was going to cut me out of the will!"*

May you like

The ballroom erupted into pure chaos.
