Chapter 5 - The Safehouse Protocol

The transition from Bellevue Hospital to the remote coastline of Montauk was executed with military precision.
Detective Brody arranged for an empty ambulance to run code-three toward a private rehabilitation facility in upstate New York, drawing away the two black SUVs that had been idling outside the hospital gates since dawn. Meanwhile, Luca—dressed in gray fleece sweats and an unmarked baseball cap, his IV access concealed beneath a heavy jacket—was wheeled out through the basement morgue exit and loaded into my dented seven-year-old Subaru Outback.
We drove east for three hours in silence, the urban sprawl of Long Island thinning into scrub pine, sand dunes, and the grey, churning expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.
The property was a low-slung, modernist structure of weathered cedar and reinforced glass, tucked deep behind a private bluff at the very end of Old Montauk Highway. It wasn't registered under Luca Moretti’s name, nor did it appear in any corporate asset disclosure. It belonged to an offshore shell company created thirty years ago by his late father.
"No one knows about this place," Luca said as I cut the car engine in the hidden underground garage beneath the house. "Not Julian. Not Vanessa. Not even the board."
"Good," I said, unbuckling my seatbelt and grabbing my medical bags from the backseat. "Because you're in no condition to fight them yet."
The next seven days were a blur of intense, grueling rehabilitation.
The poisons Dr. King had systematically introduced into Luca’s system over six months—a cocktail of long-acting sedatives, synthetic hormones, and trace endocrine disruptors—had taken a massive toll on his nervous system. For the first seventy-two hours, Luca endured violent withdrawal tremors, sweating through sheets as his liver and kidneys fought to clear the toxic residue.
I didn't sleep more than three consecutive hours a night.
I set up a makeshift clinic in the oceanfront master bedroom, administering hydration fluids, monitoring his electrolyte levels with a portable blood gas analyzer Brody had procured, and cooking high-protein, nutrient-dense meals from scratch to rebuild his glycogen reserves.
On the fourth afternoon, the fever finally broke.
I was sitting at the kitchen island, cross-referencing Julian Vance’s recent corporate filings on my laptop, when the sound of heavy, rhythmic footsteps caught my attention.
I turned around.
Luca was standing in the doorway of the gym annex, wearing nothing but black athletic shorts and a sleeveless shirt. His skin had regained its natural, sun-bronzed hue. The sunken hollows in his face had filled out, revealing the sharp, aristocratic lines of his jaw and cheekbones. The physical presence that had been smothered under months of chemical fog was back—broad-shouldered, muscular, and vibrating with controlled power.
"You shouldn't be doing heavy exertion yet," I said, rising from my stool with a clinical frown. "Your heart was under severe stress less than ninety-six hours ago."
"My heart is fine, Emma," Luca said, walking toward the counter. He took a bottle of mineral water from the fridge, uncapped it, and drank half of it in one long, continuous swallow. A bead of sweat rolled down the side of his neck, catching the afternoon sunlight. "In fact, I haven't felt this clear-headed since last winter."
He stopped two feet from me, looking down at the open laptop screen.
"What are you reading?" he asked, his voice low, his proximity sending a sudden, unexpected jolt through my chest.
"Julian made his move," I said, pointing to the financial news feed. "He held a press conference this morning on the steps of Moretti Tower. He announced that you have been admitted to an exclusive, undisclosed clinic for 'extended neurological therapy' following complications from your Aspen accident. He filed an emergency petition with the Delaware Chancery Court to appoint himself temporary acting CEO, backed by a sworn affidavit from Dr. King declaring you medically incapacitated."
Luca’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "And Vanessa?"
"She stood beside him," I replied, clicking on the video clip.
On the screen, Vanessa appeared in a flawless, somber black Chanel suit, holding a white lace handkerchief to her eyes. *"We only ask for privacy during this devastating time,"* her recorded voice purred through the laptop speakers. *"Luca's health is our only priority. Julian and I will protect his legacy until he can no longer bear the burden."*
Luca let out a soft, dangerous laugh. "She looks beautiful in black. It’s a pity she won't get to wear it to my funeral."
"The court hearing to confirm his permanent conservatorship is set for Friday morning," I warned him. "If Julian’s petition is granted, you lose all legal standing to access your accounts, your corporate servers, or your personal property. You will legally become a ward of the state under Julian’s control."
"Then we have forty-eight hours," Luca said.
He leaned across the counter, closing the laptop with a snap. His face was only inches from mine now. I could smell the clean scent of cedar and sea salt on his skin.
"Emma," he said, his voice dropping into a register that made my breath catch in my throat. "You've spent a week cleaning the poison out of my blood. You saved my life twice. But what comes next isn't nursing. It’s war. Julian has private security, dirty judges, and millions of dollars to burn. Once I step out of this house, the danger won't be a hidden syringe—it will be a bullet. You don't have to stay for that."
I looked up into his dark, fierce eyes. I saw the billionaire, the corporate conqueror, but beneath that, I saw the man who had looked at me with raw terror on a dining room floor and trusted me with his life.
"I didn't keep you alive just to watch them steal your life from a courtroom, Luca," I said, my voice steady and unwavering. "I'm not going anywhere."
Luca stared at me, his gaze dropping momentarily to my lips before rising back to my eyes. Slowly, his hand rose, his fingers brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind my ear, his touch surprisingly tender against my heated skin.

"Then let's go take back my empire," he whispered.
