Chapter 10 - The Unseen Shadow

Three months later.

Spring had finally arrived in the city, melting the snow and filling the gardens of the Westbrook estate with blooming white tulips and green ivy.

The mansion was no longer a cold, dark fortress. Laughter echoed through the hallways. Archie ran across the manicured lawns with a new golden retriever puppy, his joyful screams carrying on the warm breeze. Margaret Bennett, now fully recovered following a successful kidney transplant operation, sat on the sunny terrace, sipping tea and reading a book.

Inside the master suite, Nell stood before the large gilded mirror—the very mirror where Celine Rowe had once stood admiring her stolen green dress months ago.

Nell looked at her reflection. She wore a simple, elegant yellow sundress. Her hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, and her skin glowed with health and happiness. She reached down, gently resting her hand over her lower abdomen.

A tiny, faint smile touched her lips.

The bedroom door clicked open, and Dorian walked inside. He had just returned from his downtown offices. He had traded his heavy dark suits for a lighter navy linen jacket. He looked younger, relaxed, the constant tension in his shoulders completely dissolved.

He walked up behind Nell, wrapping his powerful arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, looking at their reflection in the mirror together.

“What are you thinking about, Mrs. Westbrook?” Dorian murmured softly, kissing her neck.

Nell turned slightly in his arms, looking up into his dark, loving eyes. She took his large hand, placing it gently over her stomach.

“I was thinking... that Archie is going to need a bigger playroom soon,” Nell whispered softly.

Dorian went completely still. His dark eyes widened in shock, looking down at his hand resting on her stomach, then back up to her glowing face.

“Nell... are you...?”

“We’re having a baby, Dorian,” Nell smiled, tears of pure happiness shining in her eyes.

Dorian let out a breathless, joyful laugh—a sound so rare and pure it filled the entire room. He lifted Nell off her feet, spinning her around gently before holding her tightly against his heart, kissing her deeply.

“Thank you,” Dorian whispered against her lips, his voice thick with emotion. “Thank you, my love.”

Later that evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a dramatic violet and orange sky across the city skyline, Dorian and Nell stood together on the high balcony of their estate, watching Archie play on the lawn below with his puppy and grandmother.

Dorian held a glass of wine, his arm wrapped securely around Nell’s waist.

Everything was perfect. The empire was secure, the family was whole, and a new life was growing within them.

However, miles away at the private international terminal of the city airport, a sleek black private jet touched down quietly under the cover of night.

Inside the darkened backseat of a black sedan waiting on the tarmac, a door clicked open.

A woman stepped out onto the damp asphalt, her high heels clicking sharply against the ground. She pulled back the hood of her black silk coat, revealing cold, vengeful eyes and a sharp, cruel smile.

Celine Rowe had returned. And in her hand, she held a confidential folder stamped with the seal of a rival syndicate from Europe—a syndicate that had just declared silent war on the Westbrook empire.

Celine looked toward the glowing lights of the city skyline in the distance, her voice whispering like poison into the night air:

“Enjoy your fairytale, Nell... because the nightmare is just beginning.”

On the balcony high above the city, a sudden cold wind swept across the terrace, fluttering the hem of Nell’s yellow dress. Dorian felt her shiver and pulled her closer into his arms, gazing out into the gathering darkness.
