Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Nursery

The victory at the gala had reshaped the city’s political landscape overnight, but inside the walls of the Westbrook mansion, the atmosphere grew increasingly tense.

Two weeks had passed since the event. Nell had officially moved into the master suite wing, taking over the management of Archie’s daily routine, education, and household affairs. The staff, who had once been her peers, now treated her with a mix of genuine respect and quiet caution. They no longer saw her as Nell the housemaid; she was now Miss Bennett, the powerful woman who held the heart—and the authority—of Dorian Westbrook.

Yet, despite the luxury surrounding her, Nell felt more isolated than ever.

It was a quiet rainy Tuesday evening. Archie was fast asleep in his bedroom, his small hands clutching a plush velvet bear. Nell sat by his bedside, reading by the soft glow of a table lamp, when she heard faint, hushed voices coming from the connecting doorway that led to Dorian’s private office.

She quietly stood up, smoothing down her knitted beige sweater, and tiptoed toward the cracked door.

Inside the office, Dorian was standing by the window, staring out at the rain-slicked grounds. Thomas stood near the desk, holding a series of black-and-white surveillance photographs.

“The Rowe family isn't backing down, Boss,” Thomas reported in a low voice. “Senator Rowe met with Marcus Vance—the head of the Northside Syndicate—last night at an abandoned docks warehouse. Vance has been looking for a reason to challenge our hold on the shipping routes for years.”

Dorian took a slow drag from his cigar, blowing a thin plume of grey smoke toward the ceiling. “And Celine?”

“She’s bitter, Boss. Dangerous,” Thomas warned. “Our informants say she’s been contacting private investigators. She’s looking for leverage on Miss Bennett. She knows about her mother’s medical records at St. Jude’s. If Vance and Rowe team up, they might try to use the mother to force Miss Bennett to betray you from the inside.”

Nell’s heart leaped into her throat. She pressed her hand against her mouth to smother a gasp.

They were going after her mother.

Inside the room, Dorian turned around slowly. His face was shadowed, making his expression impossible to decipher.

“If Marcus Vance touches a single hair on Margaret Bennett’s head,” Dorian said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that made the blood run cold in Nell’s veins, “I will burn the Northside Syndicate to the ground. Every building. Every asset. Every man.”

Thomas hesitated. “Boss... forgive me for asking, but... is this still just about the contract? Or has Miss Bennett become something more?”

Dorian went deathly quiet. He walked over to his desk, crushing the end of his cigar into a crystal ashtray.

“Nell is under my protection, Thomas,” Dorian said flatly, avoiding a direct answer. “She gave my son a mother’s warmth when he needed it most. She restored honor to this house when Celine tried to pollute it. No one touches what is mine.”

Outside the door, Nell leaned against the wall, her chest heaving as her heart battered against her ribs. What is mine. The words echoed in her head, terrifying and exhilarating all at once.

Did she belong to him now? Was she just a pawn in his syndicate war, or had the dark, ruthless crime boss actually developed feelings for the woman who used to clean his floors?

Before she could process the thought, the office door swung open completely.

Dorian stood in the doorway, his tall frame blocking the warm light of the room. His eyes narrowed slightly as he caught Nell standing there in the dim hallway.

“Listening at doors, Nell?” he asked quietly, though there was no anger in his voice.

Nell pulled her cardigan tightly around herself, taking a small step back. “I... I was just checking on Archie. I didn't mean to overhear.” She looked up into his eyes, her voice shaking slightly. “Is my mother in danger, Mr. Westbrook?”

Dorian stepped out into the hallway, closing the office door behind him, leaving Thomas inside. He walked slowly toward Nell until he was standing directly in front of her.

He reached out, his long fingers gently picking up a stray lock of dark hair that had fallen across her cheek, tucking it behind her ear. His touch was shockingly tender for a man who ordered executions with a nod.

“Your mother is safe, Nell,” Dorian assured her softly. “I have doubled the guard detail at St. Jude’s. No one gets on that floor without my personal authorization.”

“Why are you doing all of this for me?” Nell asked, her voice barely a whisper as she looked up into his dark, magnetic eyes. “I’m just a maid. I have no money, no title, no power.”

May you like

Dorian looked down at her, his gaze lingering on her lips for a brief, electric moment before moving back to her eyes.

“You are not just a maid, Nell,” Dorian whispered, his voice laced with a raw intensity that made her knees feel weak. “You are the only honest thing in my entire world.”
