Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

The war between the Westbrook Syndicate and the Rowe alliance exploded into open conflict over the next forty-eight hours.

With Celine held captive at the docks and Senator Rowe forced into a corner, the city’s underground erupted into violence. Marcus Vance’s Northside Syndicate launched retaliatory strikes against Westbrook warehouses across the eastern district. Gunfire echoed through the industrial zones at night, and the local news was filled with reports of “unexplained corporate fires.”

Inside the Westbrook mansion, security was raised to maximum threat levels. High iron gates were locked, armed men patrolled the perimeter with attack dogs, and bulletproof shutters were lowered over the grand windows.

Nell sat in the library, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea. Her mother had been moved under heavy guard to a secret, high-security private medical facility owned by Dorian’s personal physicians outside the city limits. She was safe, but Nell’s mind was in absolute turmoil.

She had witnessed the cold, brutal reality of Dorian’s world. She had seen men die in front of her. She had seen Dorian command life and death with a single sentence.

Yet... whenever he entered the room, her heart did not race out of fear. It raced out of something far more dangerous.

The heavy library doors clicked open, and Dorian stepped inside. He looked exhausted. His white shirt was stained with soot near the cuffs, his tie was loosened, and deep shadows hung under his dark eyes.

He stopped when he saw her sitting by the fireplace.

“You should be resting, Nell,” Dorian said softly, shutting the door behind him.

“I can't sleep,” Nell answered truthfully, setting her cup down on the saucer. She looked up at him. “Is it over?”

Dorian walked over, leaning his lower back against the edge of the large wooden library table near her chair. “Senator Rowe signed over his harbor permits an hour ago. He and Celine are leaving the country on a private flight to South America at midnight. They will never set foot in this city again.”

Nell let out a long, slow breath. The threat that had hung over her head and her mother’s life for weeks was finally gone.

“And Marcus Vance?” she asked.

Dorian’s jaw tightened slightly. “Vance’s organization has been neutralized. The eastern shipping lines belong entirely to the Westbrook family now.”

Silence fell over the room, filled only by the crackle of the fireplace. The conflict was won. The contract was fulfilled. Nell’s mother was saved, Celine was banished, and Dorian’s empire was more powerful than ever.

Nell looked down at her hand. The sapphire ring still gleamed on her left finger, blue and brilliant under the firelight.

“So...” Nell began, her voice small and hesitant. “Our agreement... it’s finished now, isn't it?”

Dorian went completely still. He turned his head to look at her, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her pulse flutter wildly.

“Is that what you want, Nell?” he asked quietly. “You want to take your mother, take the money, and leave?”

Nell opened her mouth to speak, but the words caught in her throat. Two months ago, her answer would have been an instant yes. She would have run as far away from this crime boss and his bloody world as her legs could carry her.

But now... she thought of Archie’s laughter when she read him bedtime stories. She thought of the way Dorian had held her in that smoke-filled hospital room, putting his body between her and danger. She thought of the gentle touch of his rough hands when he tucked her hair behind her ear.

“I... I don't know,” Nell whispered honestly, tears shining in her eyes. “This world... it frightens me, Dorian. The violence, the guns, the lies...”

Dorian slowly pushed himself off the table and knelt down in front of her chair, bringing his face level with hers. It was a position of absolute submission—a crime boss, a ruler of the city, kneeling before a former housemaid.

He reached up, gently taking her trembling hands into his broad palms.

“I cannot change what I am, Nell,” Dorian said, his voice raw with an emotion he had buried for years. “I was born into this blood and fire. But when I look at you... I see a life outside the darkness. Archie loves you. And I...” He paused, his breath hitching slightly. “I cannot bear the thought of this house without you in it.”

May you like

Nell felt a tear spill over her cheek. “Dorian...”

“Stay,” Dorian whispered, leaning close until his forehead rested against hers. “Not as a contract. Not as a ward. Stay as my wife. For real.”
