Chapter 7 - Evelyn Awakens

The rear delivery entrance of St. Jude’s Restorium smelled of damp pine needles and medical waste.

At 9:45 PM, a linen delivery truck was unloading fresh bedsheets under the flickering sodium lights. Naomi, dressed in a standard dark gray medical scrub set she had taken from David’s clinic, walked past the loading dock with a clipboard tucked under her arm.

She kept her eyes forward, her pace brisk, her expression bored—the universal armor of low-wage service workers everywhere. Nobody questioned a woman with a clipboard and gray scrubs. To the security guards chatting by the monitors, she was invisible.

She took the service elevator to the fourth floor: the Intensive Memory Care Wing.

The corridor was silent, carpeted in sound-absorbing moss-green wool, the lighting muted to simulate a perpetual dusk. Outside Room 412, a private guard in an ill-fitting blazer was slumped in a leather chair, staring at his smartphone.

Naomi didn't try to sneak past him.

She walked straight up to his desk, placed a small paper cup containing two antacid tablets in front of him, and said in a crisp, authoritative tone, “Dr. Voss’s orders. Nightly vitals check for Room 412. Did the attending nurse leave the narcotic log?”

The guard barely looked up from his screen. “Nobody told me about a vitals check.”

“Then call Dr. Voss at home and wake him up,” Naomi replied without missing a beat, her glare sharp enough to cut glass. “I’m sure he’d love to explain to Adrian Vale why his mother went into septic shock because security wouldn't let the monitoring tech verify her chest tube.”

The guard hesitated, intimidated by the icy authority in her voice, and waved his plastic keycard against the electronic lock.

The heavy walnut door clicked open.

Naomi slipped inside and closed the door behind her, clicking the interior deadbolt into place.

The room was opulent—more like a suite at the St. Regis than a hospital ward. Evelyn Vale lay in an antique four-poster bed, hooked up to a silent digital monitor and a single intravenous drip.

Her face was translucent, the skin stretched tight over high cheekbones, her gray hair brushed neatly across the pillows.

Naomi crossed the room swiftly and checked the IV bag.

A clear liquid was dripping steadily into the line. The label read *Normal Saline*, but taped to the back was a small handwritten code: *V-14*.

*Thalapram.*

Naomi clamped the IV line immediately, cutting off the flow.

She leaned over the bed, placing her hand gently on Evelyn’s cool forehead. “Mrs. Vale. Evelyn. Can you hear me?”

For three long seconds, there was no response. The digital monitor hummed softly.

Then, Evelyn’s eyelashes fluttered.

Her mouth worked, dry and cracked. A faint, shuddering gasp escaped her throat.

“Naomi...?”

“I’m here, Evelyn. Don't try to move.”

Evelyn’s eyes, milky with medication, slowly found Naomi’s face. Recognition flashed in them—not the vacant confusion of a dementia patient, but the sharp, terrifying intelligence of a woman who had realized she was trapped in a coffin.

“Adrian...” Evelyn rasped, her hand clawing weakly at the bedspread. “He brought... her here.”

“Adrian doesn't know who she is,” Naomi whispered, leaning down close. “Her real name is Celeste Vane. Thomas Vane’s daughter.”

Evelyn’s entire body went rigid. A low, keening sound came from the back of her throat.

“The... the desk,” Evelyn choked out, her fingers tightening around Naomi’s wrist with surprising strength. “In my study... Greenwich. The bottom drawer... false bottom.”

“What’s in the drawer, Evelyn?”

“The original... will,” Evelyn breathed, her heart rate monitor beeping faster. “Thomas Vane didn't steal that money alone... Adrian’s father... framed him. Adrian’s father took it all. Celeste knows. She’s... she’s going to destroy Adrian... like Adrian’s father destroyed hers.”

Naomi felt the floor beneath her sway.

The family secret wasn't that Celeste was a greedy interloper.

The secret was that the Vale fortune was built on blood, theft, and a dead man’s ruined name.
