Chapter 15 - The Unraveling

By 8:00 AM, the story had broken across the financial world.
*BLOOMBERG ALERT: Vale Meridian Halts $40B IPO Amid Criminal Investigation of Senior Executives and Impending Trust Dispute.*
*WALL STREET JOURNAL: Fiancee of Billionaire Adrian Vale Arrested on Attempted Murder and Wire Fraud Charges.*
The media helicopters circled low over the Greenwich estate, their rotor blades churning the heavy morning air. Media vans lined the perimeter walls, reporters with telephoto lenses trying to catch a glimpse through the wrought-iron gates.
Inside the mansion, Naomi Carter was doing what she had done every morning for eleven years.
She was brewing Earl Grey tea.
She measured the loose leaves into the silver strainer, poured the water at exactly two hundred degrees, and placed the porcelain cup on the polished silver tray.
Behind her, the heavy oak doors of the foyer opened.
Adrian walked in. He was still wearing the clothes from the night before, his face drawn, his eyes sunken. But for the first time since Naomi had known him, the tension in his shoulders seemed different. It wasn't the manufactured confidence of a CEO. It was the sober, grounded stillness of a man who had survived a shipwreck.
“She’s awake, Naomi,” Adrian said, leaning against the kitchen counter. “The doctors flushed the Thalapram from her system. She’s breathing on her own.”
Naomi set the silver teapot down. “Did she speak to you?”
Adrian nodded slowly. “She told me about the Cayman account. She told me about Arthur.”
He reached into his pocket and placed a key on the marble island.
A brass key to the safe deposit box at JPMorgan Chase in Manhattan.
“The three hundred and eighty million dollars,” Adrian said. “It doesn't belong to Vale Meridian. It belongs to the Vane trust. I’m instructing the board to release the funds immediately to Thomas Vane’s surviving family members in Ohio. His sisters. His cousins.”
“And Celeste?” Naomi asked.
“Celeste will face trial for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and identity fraud,” Adrian said. “Her lawyers won't be able to touch a single cent of it. She wanted justice for her father, but all she did was desecrate his memory.”
He looked at Naomi, his eyes steady.
“I spoke to the board this morning. I resigned as Chief Executive Officer of Vale Meridian.”
Naomi paused, her hand hovering over the silver sugar bowl. “Your father’s empire?”
“My father’s lie,” Adrian corrected her softly. “I’m taking a leave of absence. My mother wants to sell the Greenwich estate. She says sixteen rooms are too many for two ghosts.”
He looked around the cavernous, gleaming kitchen, then back at Naomi.
“My mother asked for you,” he said. “She wants you to come to Westchester. She says she won't drink tea made by anyone else.”
Naomi looked at the silver tray. Then she looked at the brass key resting on the marble counter.
“I’ll come, Mr. Vale,” she said evenly. “On one condition.”
Adrian straightened. “Name it.”
“You stop calling me your housekeeper,” Naomi said, her voice clear, resolute, and commanding. “For eleven years, I managed your household, your secrets, your calendar, and your family’s survival. If I stay, I’m the director of the Van Cortlandt Foundation. And the first thing we’re doing is auditing every single charity Arthur Vale ever established.”
Adrian stared at her for three seconds.
Then, for the first time in what felt like years, a faint, genuine smile touched his mouth.
