Chapter 13 - An Unlikely Ally

In the absolute darkness, chaos erupted.

Glass shattered. A body slammed against the walnut bookshelf.

“Police! Nobody move!” Vance shouted, followed by the clatter of his dropped flashlight rolling across the parquet floor.

Naomi didn't freeze. She had spent eleven years navigating this house in the dark. She knew every riser on the staircase, every floorboard that creaked, every angle of the furniture.

She heard the swift, light patter of leather-soled shoes darting out of the library and heading toward the service corridor.

Celeste was running for the east wing exits.

Naomi didn't shout. She pulled the small utility penlight from her scrub pocket, clicked it on, and sprinted into the dark hallway.

Behind her, Adrian was shouting for the backup generators.

Naomi ignored him. If Celeste reached the underground garage, she had access to four vehicles with high-performance engines and private security clearance to the back gate.

Naomi cut through the butler’s pantry, ducked beneath the swinging door of the commercial kitchen, and emerged into the narrow concrete corridor leading to the garage.

A figure was struggling with the electronic keypad on the reinforced security door.

The red light on the keypad was blinking furiously—the emergency blackout had engaged the automatic lockdown protocol.

Celeste was trapped.

She spun around as Naomi’s penlight beam hit her face.

Celeste’s hair was wild, her trench coat torn at the hem. In her right hand, she held a heavy stainless-steel chef’s knife she had snatched from the magnetic rack in the kitchen.

The blade gleamed wickedly in the narrow beam of light.

“Get away from me, Naomi,” Celeste hissed, her chest heaving, the knife held out in front of her with deadly intent. “I swear to God, I’ll gut you like an animal.”

“You’re done, Charlotte,” Naomi said, standing five feet away, completely calm, her hands open at her sides. “There are three police cruisers blocking the main gate. The backup generator will kick in in thirty seconds. You have nowhere to run.”

“I’m not going to prison!” Celeste screamed, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated venom. “My father died in a cage for this family! I’m not spending my life rotting behind concrete walls while Adrian sits in his ivory tower!”

“Your father made his choices,” Naomi said, her voice steady, deep, and unwavering. “And you made yours. You chose to become the monster you thought Arthur Vale was.”

Celeste let out a feral shriek and lunged forward, driving the chef’s knife directly toward Naomi’s chest.
