Chapter 5 - The Web of Lies

By midnight, the story had already mutated.
Money in modern America doesn't sleep; it hires public relations firms.
I sat in the sterile armchair beside Emily’s hospital bed, holding her uninjured right hand while she slept under the heavy influence of painkillers. Her left arm was wrapped in a hard fiberglass cast from knuckle to elbow. The purple and black bruising around her left eye had swollen shut, but her breathing was deep and regular. The monitors beeped softly in the quiet room.
The door pushed open quietly. Sarah Bennett slipped inside, holding two paper cups of terrible hospital coffee. She handed one to me and leaned against the windowsill, looking exhausted.
"How is she?" Sarah whispered.
"Resting," I said. "The doctor says the bone will heal cleanly, but the psychological scars will take longer."
Sarah sighed, pulling out her tablet. "You need to see this, Robert. Vance's PR machine went to work the second Ryan posted bail."
"He's already out?" My grip tightened on the paper cup.
"Marcus Vance paid five hundred thousand dollars cash bond within forty-five minutes of processing," Sarah said bitterly. "Ryan was taken to a private clinic to reset his wrist. And then this happened."
She turned the tablet toward me.
A video was circulating across social media platforms, already boasting over two million views. It was an edited clip from the gym’s interior security cameras—conveniently stripped of audio. It showed me stepping into the gym, locking the front door, dodging Marcus, and stepping into the cage with Ryan. The text overlay screamed:
**UNHINGED VETERAN ATTACKS MMA CHAMPION RYAN CARTER IN TARGETED HATE CRIME.**
Below the video, thousands of comments flooded in:
*“Arrest that boomer!”*
*“Ryan was just defending his gym!”*
*“Emily Mitchell is a liar who cheated on him and sent her crazy dad to assassinate him!”*
My blood burned, but my face remained stone. "They're trying to win the public before the arraignment."
"It's worse than that," Sarah said. "Victor Hayes went on a late-night sports podcast two hours ago. He claimed Emily broke her own wrist during a drunken tantrum at Ryan's penthouse, and that Ryan was the real victim of domestic abuse. They’re claiming your audio recording was manipulated with artificial intelligence."
A soft whimper came from the bed.
Emily was awake. Her good eye was open, glistening with fresh tears. She had heard every word.
"Dad..." Emily choked out, her voice raw. "They're... they're saying I'm crazy. People are messaging my Instagram... sending me death threats... telling me to kill myself..."
I stood up immediately, placing my coffee on the nightstand, and sat on the edge of her mattress. I gently smoothed the hair back from her forehead.
"Look at me, Emily," I commanded softly.
She turned her tear-streaked face toward me, trembling.
"You listen to me very carefully," I said, my voice steady as an anchor. "The noise out there means nothing. Wolves do not lose sleep over the opinions of sheep, and monsters only scream when the light hits them. You told the truth. You stood up. And I am not going anywhere."
"They have so much power, Dad," she wept. "Ryan has millions of fans. Victor knows politicians. We're just... us."
"They have an illusion of power," I told her, kissing her unbruised cheek. "They have money built on vanity, cruelty, and intimidation. But they forgot something important."
"What?" she whispered.
"They forgot that when you build a kingdom out of lies, all it takes is one spark to burn the whole damn thing to the ground."
I stood up, turning to Sarah. "Where does Victor Hayes spend his Friday nights?"
Sarah narrowed her eyes. "Robert, don't do something that takes you away from Emily."
May you like
"I'm not going to touch him, Sarah," I replied, a cold smile touching the corners of my mouth. "I'm going to take away his crown."
