Chapter 4 - The Sound of Sirens

The gym doors shook as heavy boots kicked against the outer wood.

"Police! Open up! This is the City of Oakridge Police Department!"

Victor Hayes went pale. He dropped the wrench he had been using to pry at the cage door. The three remaining fighters backed against the far wall, hands raised in the air, terrified of being linked to whatever nightmare had just unfolded.

I walked to the cage door, reached through the gaps in the mesh, slid the steel bolt back with my uninjured hand, and pushed the gate open.

Stepping out, I walked calmly over to the gym entrance, turned the deadbolt, and pulled the double doors inward.

Detective Sarah Bennett stood on the threshold, her service weapon drawn at low ready, flanked by four uniformed officers with tasers and batons. Behind them, the flashing red and blue lights of three patrol cruisers painted the damp evening street in chaotic color.

Sarah’s eyes swept the room in a fraction of a second. She saw Marcus still groaning on the floor, Ryan weeping inside the octagon, Victor frozen in terror, and me—standing tall with a split lip and rolled-up sleeves.

"Robert," Sarah said, holstering her weapon with an exasperated sigh. "What in God's name did you do?"

"I conducted an interview, Detective," I replied evenly.

"He's a lunatic!" Victor suddenly shrieked, finding his voice as he pointed a trembling finger at me. "He broke in! He locked us in here! He assaulted my fighters! Look at Ryan! He broke his wrist! He assaulted my champion! I want him arrested for attempted murder!"

The uniformed officers moved past me, securing the perimeter and checking on the two downed men. An officer knelt by Ryan, who was rocking back and forth, muttering incoherently about pain medication.

Sarah didn't look at Victor. She looked at me, her sharp hazel eyes narrowing. "Robert, tell me you didn't do this without cause."

I walked over to the front counter, picked up my phone, and tapped the screen to stop the recording.

"I didn't break in," I said, holding the device up. "The doors were open for business. I walked in to ask Mr. Carter why my daughter was admitted to Oakridge Memorial with a fractured radius, three cracked ribs, and a severe concussion."

I tapped the screen, turning the volume to maximum.

The gym fell dead silent as Ryan’s recorded voice blared through the speaker with crystalline clarity:

*“Emily’s soft. Just like you... When I tell my woman to sit down and shut her mouth, she sits down. She threw a glass at me. I disciplined her. That’s what happens when you disrespect me.”*

Then Victor’s voice followed:

*“Get out of here, Grandpa, unless you want to leave in a body bag... Let Marcus handle the trash.”*

Then the sound of Marcus lunging, followed by the sickening thud of his body hitting the floor, and Ryan demanding: *“Step inside the cage. Let’s see what that Marine garbage does against an actual professional.”*

Sarah Bennett looked up from the phone. Her jaw was set like granite. The slight professional neutrality she had maintained vanished instantly. She turned to face Victor and Ryan.

"Officer Davis," Sarah said, her voice dripping with ice. "Cuff Ryan Carter for felony domestic assault, aggravated battery, and terroristic threats."

"What?!" Victor yelled. "He's the victim here! Look at him! The old man attacked him!"

"Your fighter challenged an invitee to mutual combat inside a licensed athletic cage on your own premises," Sarah countered smoothly, displaying an encyclopedic knowledge of state law. "Furthermore, Mr. Mitchell was defending himself against an aggressive threat after your fighter confessed on digital audio to a violent felony committed less than four hours ago."

She turned her gaze directly onto Victor.

"And as for you, Mr. Hayes... you aided and abetted a known fugitive, threatened a citizen with bodily harm, and conspired to commit assault. Put your hands behind your back."

"You can't do this!" Victor spat, backing away until an officer pinned his arms behind him and slapped cold steel cuffs over his thick wrists. "Do you know who sponsors this gym? Do you know Marcus Vance? He owns half this city's commercial real estate! You’ll lose your badge for this!"

"Tell it to the magistrate, Victor," Sarah said calmly.

Paramedics entered with a gurney, rolling Ryan out first. As the stretcher passed me, Ryan looked up through swollen, tear-stained eyes. The swagger, the social-media god, the dangerous cage predator—all of it had melted into pathetic misery.

"You're a dead man, Mitchell," Ryan whispered through cracked teeth. "I have money. You have nothing."

May you like

"You have followers, Ryan," I said quietly, leaning down so only he could hear. "I have brothers. Let's see who shows up when the war begins."
