Chapter 8 - The Desperate Plea

The following morning, thirty minutes before the scheduled arraignment hearing at the Santa Clara County Hall of Justice, a visitor arrived at Marcus Vance’s office that none of us anticipated.

Evelyn Miller.

She didn't look like the haughty, emerald-clad matriarch who had sneered on my front porch thirty-six hours ago. Her designer suit was wrinkled, her makeup was smeared, and her eyes were swollen with sleepless terror. She looked twenty years older, stripped bare of the social status that had once insulated her from reality.

She stood in the reception area, trembling, clutching her handbag against her stomach like a shield.

Marcus’s security guard stood between her and the inner corridor, his expression unyielding.

"Marcus, please," Evelyn begged as Marcus and I stepped into the foyer. "Just five minutes. I am begging you as a mother."

Marcus crossed his arms, his face carved from marble. "Mrs. Miller, you are speaking to opposing counsel in an active criminal and civil litigation matter. Anything you say can and will be used against your son."

"I don't care!" she sobbed, collapsing onto her knees right there on the reception carpet, heedless of her dignity. "Naomi... Naomi, look at me!"

I stopped, looking down at the woman who had demanded I apologize to Brianna while my mother sat bleeding on the floorboards of the bridal suite.

"Get up, Evelyn," I said quietly. "You’re embarrassing yourself."

"Brandon is in a maximum-security holding cell!" she cried, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "They have him on suicide watch! The media is camping outside our house in Los Gatos! Our club membership was revoked this morning! My husband’s board of directors is forcing him to resign! We are ruined, Naomi! Totally ruined!"

"You aren't ruined because of me, Evelyn," I replied, my voice steady and devoid of pity. "You are ruined because you raised a thief, an abuser, and a coward. You watched your son hold my mother down. You watched Waylon shove her into a wall. And instead of calling an ambulance, you told me to apologize so Brandon’s wedding reception wouldn't be wasted."

"He was confused! Brianna poisoned his mind!" Evelyn pleaded, crawling forward an inch before Marcus’s security guard stepped firmly between us. "Brianna manipulated him! She told him you would leave him if he didn't secure that salon investment! Brandon loves you, Naomi! He loves that baby!"

A cold, razor-sharp fury ignited behind my ribs.

"Don't you ever speak of my child," I whispered, leaning down so she could hear every syllable clearly. "Your son didn't love me. He didn't love this baby. He planned to steal my inheritance, trap me in a fraudulent marriage, and use his family’s money to rip my child from my arms. That isn't love, Evelyn. That is predation."

"We will give you the money back!" Evelyn screamed, pulling a cashier’s check from her purse with trembling, frantic hands. "One hundred thousand dollars! Double what he took! We’ll sign over the deed to Brandon’s BMW! We’ll pay all of Miriam’s medical bills! Just tell the District Attorney you want to drop the elder abuse charge! If Brandon goes to state prison, his life is over!"

Marcus stepped forward, taking the cashier’s check from her trembling fingers, looking at it for two seconds, and handing it right back to her.

"Mrs. Miller," Marcus said with chilling precision. "Attempting to bribe a complaining witness on the morning of an arraignment is a third-degree felony under California Penal Code 137. If you do not stand up, walk out of this building, and leave this jurisdiction immediately, I will have the bailiffs in Department 42 take you into custody within five minutes."

Evelyn stared at Marcus, then up at me.

She saw no hesitation in my eyes. No lingering sentimentality. No weakness to exploit.

Slowly, painfully, she dragged herself up from the floor. Her hands shook so violently she dropped her car keys twice before managing to pick them up. Without another word, she turned and stumbled out of the office doors, a ghost wandering through the ruins of her own arrogance.

I turned to Marcus. "Let's go to court."
