Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Thread

By noon, the downtown San Jose financial district was buzzing with the scandal.
Brandon Miller had not merely been arrested; he had been escorted out of the thirty-story glass tower of his private equity firm in broad daylight, his hands cuffed behind his back, flanked by two detectives from the Santa Clara County Financial Crimes Division.
His firm, terrified of regulatory scrutiny and brand contamination, immediately issued a public statement terminating his employment with prejudice, freezing his corporate accounts, and pledging full cooperation with law enforcement.
In Marcus Vance’s corner office on the fourteenth floor of the City Center building, the atmosphere was quiet, methodical, and lethal.
I sat in a leather armchair opposite Marcus’s expansive mahogany desk. Beside me, my mother rested with a soft throw blanket over her shoulders, sipping hot herbal tea provided by Marcus’s paralegal.
Spread across the desk were dozens of financial spreadsheets, offshore incorporation certificates, and medical records.
"The District Attorney is pursuing maximum charges," Marcus explained, reviewing a file. "Brandon is facing two counts of felony grand larceny, one count of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit elder abuse. Because the money stolen from your grandmother’s inheritance exceeded the fifty-thousand-dollar threshold, California law mandates state prison time upon conviction."
"What about Brianna?" I asked, feeling that protective maternal warmth thrumming deep within my belly.
"Brianna’s situation is even worse," Marcus said, a ghost of a grim smile touching his lips. "When our commercial property managers entered Luxe Velvet Salon this morning to execute the eviction and asset seizure, they didn't just find styling chairs. They found over eighty thousand dollars’ worth of counterfeit, unapproved European cosmetic injectables and black-market hair care chemicals stored in her back room."
My mother gasped softly. "Counterfeit chemicals?"
"Brianna was injecting clients with unregulated botulinum toxins and using toxic industrial relaxers imported illegally through shell companies to maximize profit margins," Marcus continued. "The California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology has revoked her license indefinitely. The Food and Drug Administration has joined the investigation. Brianna was arrested two hours ago at her apartment in Los Gatos."
I leaned back into the leather cushion, letting out a long, slow breath. Less than twenty-four hours ago, Brianna had sneered at me in the bridal suite, kicking filthy mop water onto my mother’s handmade dress, convinced she was untouchable. Now, she was sitting in a county holding cell facing federal charges.
"Marcus," I said, leaning forward. "There is still the issue of the social media campaign. Millions of people have seen Brianna’s video portraying me as an unhinged bridezilla. Local businesses are still flooding my email with boycott threats."
Marcus picked up his desk phone and pressed an extension. "Send in Sarah."
A moment later, a sharp, polished young woman in a tailored navy blazer entered the room carrying a tablet.
"Naomi, Miriam, meet Sarah Jenkins," Marcus said. "Sarah heads our firm’s strategic communications and crisis litigation team. Sarah, is the press package ready?"
"Fully compiled and verified, Mr. Vance," Sarah said, handing me the tablet. "We have prepared a comprehensive counter-release. It includes the complete, unedited Santana Row salon surveillance video with verified audio subtitles, Dr. Martinez’s official medical forensic report detailing Miriam’s fractured ribs, the Santa Clara Sheriff’s arrest warrants for Waylon Vance and Brandon Miller, and the certified wire transfer documentation showing the theft of your inheritance."
"When does it go live?" I asked.
"Right now," Sarah smiled. "We are releasing it exclusively to the San Jose Mercury News, the San Francisco Chronicle, and every major Bay Area news outlet. Simultaneously, our digital team is pushing the unedited surveillance clip across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook with verified court document watermarks."
"Wait," Miriam spoke up softly, her hand trembling slightly as she set down her teacup. "Will people... will people see my head? Will they see what she did to me?"
I looked at my mother, seeing the lingering shadow of shame in her eyes. The wound Brianna had inflicted wasn't merely physical; it was a violation of her pride, her lineage, her connection to Grandma.
I knelt beside my mother’s chair, taking both of her hands in mine.
"Mom," I said gently. "Look at me. There is no shame in what they did to you. The shame belongs entirely to them. Grandma gave you that braid as a symbol of resilience, right? She taught you that hair holds the memory of surviving hard winters and tough times. When people see that video, they won't see an old woman being humiliated. They will see the sheer cruelty of cowards, and they will see a mother who stood tall even when she was broken."
Tears welled in Miriam’s eyes, but this time, she didn't look away. She lifted her chin, taking a deep, shuddering breath.
"Release it, Mr. Vance," my mother said, her voice clear and firm. "Let the world see what kind of people they are."
Sarah nodded respectfully, tapped three commands on her tablet, and looked up with a satisfied smile.

"It's live."
