Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Hospital Wing

Luca didn't waste a breath. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me behind him as he kicked open the office door, surging into the clinic corridor.

The hallway was filled with thick, white fire-suppression smoke and the flashing red strobes of the alarm system. The clinical smell of antiseptic was choked out by chemical powder.

"Stay behind me!" Luca commanded, his weapon raised, his eyes scanning through the white haze like a hawk.

Suddenly, two figures dressed in black tactical uniforms and ballistic vests lunged out from the side examination room. Both were armed with short-barrel shotguns.

"Moretti!" one shouted.

Luca didn't flinch. In two blindingly fast movements, his weapon barked twice with muffled *thwips*. Both men collapsed to the floor like empty sacks of grain before their weapons could even level.

"Mama!"

A terrified, high-pitched scream echoed from the pediatric examination room at the end of the hall.

"LILY!" I screamed, breaking away from Luca’s grasp and sprinting blindly through the smoke.

"Sarah, wait!" Luca shouted, chasing after me.

I threw my weight against the heavy wooden door of room 104 and burst inside.

The sight that greeted me turned my blood to absolute ice.

Dr. Sterling was lying unconscious on the floor near the examination table, blood trickling from a heavy gash on his temple. The pediatric nurse was tied to a chair with zip-ties, her mouth gagged with silver duct tape.

Standing in the center of the room, holding seven-year-old Lily in a chokehold with one arm, was Vanessa Bellini.

She looked entirely unhinged. Her designer makeup was smeared with sweat and tears, her hair was matted into wild tangles, and she was wearing a stolen paramedic’s windbreaker over her stained clothes. In her right hand, she held a gleaming surgical scalpel, pressed directly against my daughter’s delicate throat.

"Mama! MAMA!" Lily shrieked, kicking her tiny legs, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.

"Let her go, Vanessa!" I screamed, dropping to my knees, holding out my trembling hands in absolute, agonizing supplication. "Please! Take me! Kill me! Don't hurt my baby! She has a broken heart! She can't breathe!"

Vanessa’s eyes were wild, bloodshot, dilated with pure madness. She sneered, pressing the sharp edge of the scalpel closer to Lily's skin. A tiny, terrifying bead of crimson appeared at the tip of the blade.

"You ruined everything, you filthy little gutter rat!" Vanessa hissed, her voice vibrating with hysterical rage. "You and that senile old bitch! Daddy is facing thirty years in a federal cage! My accounts are frozen! My friends won't answer my calls! I am a Bellini! I was supposed to be the queen of this city!"

Luca stepped into the doorway behind me. He stopped dead, his weapon instantly lowering to the floor. The sight of the scalpel against a seven-year-old child's throat made even the ruthless Chicago boss freeze in his tracks.

"Vanessa," Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all emotion. "Put the knife down."

"Back up, Luca!" Vanessa screamed, yanking Lily tighter against her chest. Lily gasped, choking for air. "Drop your gun, or I swear to God I’ll open her carotid artery right in front of you! Drop it!"

Luca slowly, deliberately knelt down and placed his firearm flat on the linoleum floor, kicking it toward the corner of the room. He raised both empty hands.

"The gun is gone, Vanessa," Luca said, taking a half-step forward. "You want money? I have forty million in bearer bonds in the estate vault. Daniel has a helicopter fueled on the south helipad right now. I will give you the bonds, the bird, and a four-hour head start to Mexico. Just let the little girl go."

Vanessa laughed—a high, shrill, broken sound that echoed horribly off the tiled walls. "You think I’m stupid, Luca? You’d shoot the chopper out of the sky before it cleared Lake Michigan! No! I want a signed confession from Sarah Collins! I want her on video stating she stole the necklace, that she forged the financial records, and that she threw Evelyn down the stairs!"

"I’ll do it!" I cried instantly, tears blinding me. "I’ll say whatever you want! I’ll sign anything! Just let my baby go! Please, God, let her go!"

Vanessa sneered, glancing down at me with utter contempt. "You really love this little defective brat, don't you? It’s pathetic. You’re both nothing. Just garbage that should have starved in the streets—"

In that split second, Vanessa made a fatal mistake. Her gaze drifted downward toward me, her focus breaking from the man standing six feet behind her.

Lily, feeling her captor's grip loosen for a microsecond, bit down with all the strength in her tiny jaw directly into Vanessa’s forearm.

"AARGH!" Vanessa shrieked in pain, instinctively jerking her arm back.

"RUN, LILY!" I screamed.

I didn't think. I didn't hesitate. Maternal instinct took over every neuron in my brain. I launched myself forward across the linoleum, diving between the blade and my child.

The scalpel slashed downward. A searing, white-hot line of agony tore across my left shoulder and upper arm as I slammed my body into Vanessa’s legs, tackling her to the floor.

"MAMA!" Lily scrambled backward, crawling toward the corner beneath the desk.

Vanessa scrambled on the floor, snarling like a feral beast, raising the scalpel to plunge it into my neck. "Die, you bitch!"

She never got the chance.

A shadow fell over us like an eclipse.

Luca’s massive hand closed around Vanessa’s wrist with the crushing force of a hydraulic press. A sickening *crack* echoed through the room as he snapped her radius bone in two.

Vanessa shrieked in agony, the scalpel clattering harmlessly to the floor.

Luca hauled her off me by the collar of her jacket with one hand, lifting her completely off her feet until her toes dangled six inches above the floor. His face was a mask of cold, unadulterated demon rage. His dark eyes were black pits of absolute death.

"You touched the child," Luca whispered, his voice vibrating through the very concrete of the foundation. "You drew blood on Sarah."

Vanessa choked, clutching at Luca’s wrist with her unbroken hand, her face turning purple. "Luca... please... mercy..."

"There is no mercy for monsters," Luca said.

He hurled her across the room with devastating force. Vanessa slammed against the reinforced steel equipment cabinet and crumpled into a broken, sobbing heap on the floor.

Before she could even raise her head, Daniel and four heavily armed tactical guards burst into the room with assault rifles raised.

"Take her," Luca commanded, not even looking back at the woman he had once intended to marry. "Hand her over to the FBI field office in downtown Chicago. Tell Agent Vance she attempted first-degree kidnapping, aggravated assault on a minor, and attempted murder. If she survives the night in holding, make sure she's placed in maximum isolation."

"Yes, Boss!" Daniel and his men dragged a weeping, broken Vanessa out into the corridor, her shrieks fading into the distance.

Luca dropped to his knees beside me.

"Sarah!" he gasped, his voice cracking with genuine, desperate terror.

I was lying on my side, clutching my bleeding shoulder. The pain was intense, but my eyes were scanning frantically across the room. "Lily... where is my baby? Lily!"

"I’m here, Mama! I’m here!"

Lily crawled out from under the desk and threw her arms around my neck, sobbing uncontrollably. "Mama, you’re bleeding! The bad lady cut you!"

"I’m okay, my love," I gasped, burying my face in her hair, ignoring the throbbing agony in my arm. "I’m okay. You're safe. You're safe, baby."

Luca gently pulled both of us into his massive chest. His arms wrapped around us like iron shields, holding us against his heartbeat. I could feel his chest heaving, his entire body trembling with the adrenaline of what had almost been lost.

He buried his face into my hair, his lips pressing a desperate, reverent kiss against my temple.

May you like

"I have you," Luca whispered, his voice thick with unshed tears. "I swear to God, Sarah... as long as I draw breath, no one will ever hurt you again."
