Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Syndicate

The rain returned on Monday morning, lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate's private medical pavilion.

Down on the first floor, in the state-of-the-art clinic that Luca’s father had originally built for his own end-of-life care, Lily was undergoing her final pre-operative assessments. Dr. Sterling, a tall, kind-eyed cardiologist with silver-streaked hair, was gently maneuvering an ultrasound probe over Lily’s chest.

On the monitor, the black-and-white image of Lily’s little heart pulsed rhythmically.

"You see that right there, Sarah?" Dr. Sterling pointed with a gloved finger to a tiny, dark aperture between the two upper chambers. "That's the atrial septal defect. It's approximately eight millimeters wide. Normally, that would cause severe pulmonary hypertension over time. But we caught it before any irreversible vascular damage occurred."

He wiped the warm gel from Lily’s chest and helped her pull her pink sweater back down.

"She’s in prime condition for tomorrow morning," Dr. Sterling said with a broad, confident smile. "We’ll perform a minimally invasive transcatheter closure. We enter through the femoral vein in the groin, guide a small mesh closure device directly into the septum, and seal the hole like an umbrella opening in the wind. Ninety minutes of surgery. Three days in recovery, and she’ll have a completely normal, healthy heart for the rest of her life."

Tears of profound, overwhelming gratitude filled my eyes. "Thank you, Doctor. Thank you so much."

"Don't thank me," Dr. Sterling chuckled softly, glancing toward the door. "Thank the boss. He threatened to buy the entire medical board and reassign me to pathology if I didn't personally clear my surgical schedule for the next forty-eight hours."

While Lily sat on the examination table coloring with a nurse, Luca’s voice drifted in from the adjacent private consultation office. The door was slightly ajar.

I stepped quietly toward the doorway.

Inside, Luca was seated behind a heavy walnut desk, surrounded by stacks of financial binders, while Daniel and an older woman with silver spectacles—an independent forensic accountant named Elizabeth Cruz—stood before him.

"We finished auditing the twelve families, Boss," Elizabeth said, adjusting her glasses. "It’s worse than we thought."

Luca looked up, his jaw set. "Explain."

"For the past four years, every single widow and child on Evelyn’s original scholarship list was systematically cut off," Elizabeth explained, handing Luca a spreadsheet. "Richard Bellini forged signatures, claiming the families had moved out of state or voluntarily waived their benefits. Mrs. Ortiz—whose husband took three bullets protecting your father in 2014—has been working night shifts at an industrial laundry facility while her son was forced to drop out of high school. The Vance family was evicted from their home in Berwyn two months ago. Little Maya Lin... her family had to launch an online crowd-funder just to pay for her chemotherapy."

Luca’s fist slammed onto the walnut desk with enough force to make the heavy crystal decanter rattle.

"How much did Bellini steal from those twelve families?" Luca demanded, his voice trembling with controlled fury.

"Directly from their personal allocations? Four point two million dollars," Elizabeth answered. "With interest, penalties, and diverted foundation dividends? Over eighteen million."

Luca didn't hesitate for a single heartbeat. "Daniel."

"Yes, Boss?"

"Liquidate my personal liquid reserves in the Swiss accounts. I want cashier’s checks drawn immediately. Pay off Mrs. Ortiz’s mortgage and establish an irrevocable full-ride college trust for her son. Buy the Vance family their house back—not rent, buy it outright under their name. Pay every single medical bill for Maya Lin at St. Jude’s, and wire an additional two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to each of the twelve families for emotional restitution."

Elizabeth blinked, stunned. "Mr. Moretti... that’s over twelve million dollars out of your private capital."

"My father’s men died for this family," Luca said, his eyes blazing with absolute authority. "Their children will not beg for bread while I have a single dollar in my pocket. Make the transfers today. By five p.m., I want receipts on my desk."

"Yes, sir," Elizabeth said, bowing her head in deep respect before gathering her papers and hurrying out of the room.

As she passed me in the doorway, I stood frozen in the hallway, clutching my hands to my heart.

Here was a man the world called a monster, a criminal, a ruthless syndicate head. Yet, with a single stroke of a pen, he was restoring twelve broken families from ruin—families he didn't even know personally—simply because his mother’s honor and his family’s code demanded it.

Luca looked up and saw me standing in the doorway. The harsh, lethal expression on his face instantly softened.

"Sarah," he said, setting down his pen. "Come in."

I stepped into the office, my knees feeling slightly weak. "Luca... what you just did for those families... it’s incredible."

"It’s not incredible," Luca countered softly, leaning back in his leather chair. "It’s what should have been done four years ago. I was blind, Sarah. I let myself get wrapped up in syndicate turf wars and corporate acquisitions, and I trusted the wrong people to run my family’s charity. If it weren't for my mother—and for you—Richard Bellini would have bled those poor people dry while I sat in my ivory tower."

He stood up, walking around the desk until he was standing right in front of me. The air grew thick, electric, full of an unsaid longing that had been building between us with every passing hour.

"How is Lily?" he asked softly.

"Dr. Sterling said she’s ready," I whispered, looking up into his dark, mesmerizing eyes. "He said the surgery tomorrow morning will be completely successful. She’s going to live a normal life, Luca. Because of you."

Luca reached out, his fingertips gently grazing my cheekbone, sending a wave of delicious warmth cascading down my neck.

"Because of *you*, Sarah," Luca murmured, his thumb lightly tracing the contour of my lower lip. "You never gave up on her. You never broke."

I leaned into his touch, my heart pounding against my ribs faster than it ever had before. For months, I had locked my feelings away, telling myself that a dirty, exhausted maid had no right to look at the powerful, unreachable Luca Moretti. But now, standing in the quiet sanctity of this room, with his fingers warm against my skin and his eyes searching mine with raw, unmasked desire, the barriers crumbled.

"Luca..." I breathed.

Before he could speak, the fire alarm in the medical clinic shrieked to life.

A deafening, ear-splitting siren tore through the pavilion. Overhead, emergency strobe lights flashed red, bathing the walls in blood-colored light.

Luca’s hand dropped instantly, his instincts kicking into overdrive. He reached behind his back, drawing a suppressed semi-automatic pistol from his waistband in a single, fluid motion.

"Daniel!" Luca roared into his tactical radio.

The radio crackled with static and the sound of distant shouting. *"Boss! The outer perimeter power grid has been cut! Someone triggered the fire suppression system in the south wing! It’s a breach! Multiple hostiles on the ground floor!"*

Luca turned to me, his eyes wide with lethal alarm.

May you like

"Lily," I screamed, pure terror tearing through my lungs. "Lily is in the clinic!"
